Careerism in the Army

Why the generals cannot deliver in the army: 1) Our education system is not compatible with the contemporary requirements. It neither creates awareness, nor develops the personality of our youth to its optimum potential. It is also deficient in inculcating critical thinking, problem solving or decision making. 2) Due to the above deficits; once an otherwise fine officer reaches the star rank; he is not fully equipped to meet the rigors/ responsibilities of higher office (fine exceptions notwithstanding). 3) Juxtapose the above to our debilitating feudal culture, which among other things kills reasoning, logical thinking and initiative; and eschews merit and promotes mediocrity; you get a cover your ass syndrome (CYA). 4) Since the feudal mindset chokes professionalism; the best and the brightest seldom make it to the top. 5) Due to the above caboodle, you get lack-luster leadership at the top. 6) The end result is that you end up by sacrificing the flower of your youth in harebrained military operations. The Kargil debacle is the latest example. 7) An objective analysis of our past wars would reveal that the officers and men at company and battalion level acquitted themselves with lan; but shoddy generalship ensured that all sacrifices and valor went down the drain.
