6+1 Writing Traits

The first key trait is ideas. This includes the main message, content, theme, with supporting details. Details need to be strong, interesting and informative. The second key trait is organization. Students writing should have a strong beginning and ending. Details should be put in order. The third key trait is word choice. The student needs to choose words carefully, use strong words and juicy words. The fourth key trait is voice. Writing should have style. Writing should sound like the student. The students personality should come through the writing. The fifth key trait is conventions. Student uses proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. The sixth key trait is sentence fluency. The students writing should flow and is easy to read. Sentences shouldnt start with the same words. The length of sentences should vary. The seventh key trait is presentation. The overall appearance of the students work which includes: neatness and proper margins.
