The use of Rhetorical analysis a complaint letter is vital to get the reader to side with a writer.

In his complaint letter, Mason Gibbs used pathos, logos and ethos to try and persuade his audience. The complaint letter was about his experience with computer troubles. He wanted to have his computer sent in free of charge, because he is a college student and does not want to pay for a substantial cost for repairs. The use of athos, !thos, and "ogos was vital to persuading his audience. The spea#er is Mason Gibbs. He comes to his reader with the voice of a college student trying to ma#e ends meet. He addresses his audience in a calm way. He starts by telling us the story of how he got his laptop and the problems that followed. This is when he first used !thos. He described how this problem was frustrating to him. He uses his internal fear of losing his wor# to connect with the reader. He also uses logos in this paragraph by stating that a wor#ing computer is necessary in order to succeed in the online classes that he has registered in. He wants his audience to ta#e pity on his situation in order to have his problem solved. This is apparent when he stated that he had to go to a public library for his assignments after his attempts failed. His audience seemed to be $indows management. The reason for this is because he believes that they need to resolve the issue. This is apparent when he tal#s about the customer service representative. He places the customer service representative as someone who misunderstands his computer problems. This is probably because he thin#s that $indows does not care about his issue. He also blames the company for this incident. %lso he feels li#e $indows does have the power to give into his wishes. This is because he threatens them with going to a competitor. He intends for his complaint letter to receive results. Mason appeals to his audience&s sense of logic and emotions by reiterating that he is a college student. 'everal times in the paper, he states that because he is in college he cannot afford to spend money on repairing his computer. He is aware of college students who are depending on financial aid and those who are also in debt once they graduate. This could relate to his audience and possibly their experience with student loans.

The purpose of his complaint letter was persuasion. He accomplishes this by using !thos to connect to his audience&s sense of emotion. (sing words li#e )frustrating*, )happy* and )afraid* can stir emotion into the reader. If his use of !thos was not as effective as he thought then he will have to appeal to their sense of morals. He used pathos in order for the audience to see this )in+ustice* that happened to him. In a slight way, he seems to vilify his audience by holding them responsible for his computer problems. He wants his audience to ma#e an exception for his case. He also respects his audience by addressing them politely in the beginning and end of the letter. This is another way for appealing to his audience&s sense of morality. ,o one would want to deny someone something if they are nice to them. This shows a proper understanding of athos. The use of athos,!thos and "ogos in Mason&s complaint letter has been effective in stating what he wants, and what he expects his audience to do. He used !thos in order to cast a sympathetic light on himself. He implemented athos in order for the audience to be more inclined not to re+ect him. He used "ogos to get his audience to see that he is a college student with a future debt problem. These are the purposes of Rhetoric in his complaint letter.
