IX562 UNIT 6 DISCUSSION Emerging Technologies and Future Trends

Your supervisor has come to you with an important question about the focus of your department for the next 5 years, What emerging technology do you feel is going to have the biggest impact on education and would make the best investment for our instructional technology money?

To Ms. Brown, our district math supervisor and to the other stakeholders attending this meeting, good afternoon. My name is Linda Staten, I am the instructional technologist for Charlotte Middle School. I am here with you today to present my findings on the topic of, Emerging Technology and how we must approach its implementation into our district and schools during the next 5 years. The first thing I thought about when approached to do this study was, finding technology areas that we will be able to sustain and use as effective and efficient components of our instructional curricula over a 5 year time span. It will also be important to choose programs that can transition into our current system smoothly and that will be user friendly and academically enlightening for students and teachers.

I have reviewed several different types of technology programs, devices and sites. Here is a list of those emerging technologies ("Emerging Technology," 2012, p. 1): 1. The Flipped Classroom 2. iPad and table device use 3. Smartphones and BYOD programs 4. One to one instruction 5. Gamification of Educational Instruction ( positive rewards using fun tactics) 6. Free online courses (MOOC= Massively Open Online Course)

IX562 UNIT 6 DISCUSSION 7. Student response systems and polling devices 8. Cloud apps for filing, storage and note-taking 9. 3D Printing and remote manufacturing 10. Learning Analysis Each of the above emerging technologies has pros and cons. It was my job to bring to you my opinion of the one/s that I thought would be most beneficial to our math department and school district. I have chosen three technologies for our district and department to look at developing over the next 5 years, taking into consideration; time for training and implementation, cost,

durability and sustainability. First, I think we need a system that will give us (teachers, students, parents, administrators) evidence (data) about student growth and development, a learning analysis system. These systems are cost effective because they assist teachers and parents as they guide and cultivate student academic progress. Next, I would choose, one to one instruction; this process provides students with their own technological device ( laptop, ipad, etc.) in an effort to prepare each student for 21st century forms of communication at home, work, and/or play and to make them active participants in their learning endeavors. Finally, I think that the most productive, up and coming emerging technology is, 3D Printing and remote manufacturing. If we in the math department, in conjunction with our colleagues in the science department, can prepare our students to demonstrate knowledge of how to use this system as a means of producing quality products; then they will be on the cutting edge of a whole new dimension that connects; design, architecture and manufacturing to one another. This could be the beginning of spring boarding the US back to the top of the world ladder, when it comes to the areas of math and science.

Based on my research, this is the direction that I think our district and math department should move toward over the next 5 years. Ms. Brown and members of our district board and school boards, thank you for allowing me to present this information to you today. Please take some time to review my findings. I look forward to our next meeting in a few days, when we will make decisions relative to the emerging technologies that you want to use and begin to plan for their implementation into our district over the next 5 years.
