Grade: 3rd Grade Ancient Greece

Objectives The students will be able to identify the contribution Ancient Greece made to architecture was columns SOL 3.1- The students will explain how the contribution of ancient Greece have influenced the present world in terms of architecture, government, and sports. Visual ArtsArt History and Cultural Context 3.16: The students will compare and contrast art and architecture from other cultures Essential Questions What architectural contribution did Greece give the world? What are the famous columns in Greece called? What do columns look like? Materials for Learning Activity Pictures of columns Pipe cleaners Construction paper Glue Popsicle Sticks Markers Toilet paper rolls Procedure for Learning Activity Introduction ( 15-20 min., Whole Group) The teacher will first talk to the class about how there are many contributions that Greece has made to the world and that today we will be talking about one of them. One thing Greece has given us is a certain design used in architecture for buildings.

Show the picture of The Parthenon and the Capital building next to one another. Have a discussion with the students: What do you notice about the 2 buildings? What conclusions can you make? Have the students volunteer to share out. Explain that Greece gave us columns which are still used today in the building such as the Capital building. One famous building with columns that the Greeks created is called The Parthenon, which is the building next to the Capital. Ask the students: Have you seen any buildings with columns? If so, what were they? Activity ( 20 min., Individual) Once the teacher discusses buildings they have see today with columns, the students will get a chance to build their own building with columns. The teacher will place a bunch of supplies at each table group. The students each will make a building that includes columns any way that they would like to. This activity relies solely on their creativity. The only requirement is that it has to have columns. Closing ( 5 min., Whole Group) A few students will share their column building with the class. Assessment Column Buildings- The teacher will look at each students columns and see if they understand what columns are. Observation- Teacher will observe while the children are creating their buildings to see if everyone is on the right track. Differentiation Bodily- Kinesthetic Learners- Hey are physically creating a column with their hands. Visual Learners- There are pictures used to show what columns look like. Struggling Learners- Show them more pictures of columns so they get more reinforcement of what they are. Advanced Learners- Writing prompt: Why do you think the Greeks build buildings with columns? Was it just for appearance or do you think there was another reason? Technology Integration Smart Board- Used to show pictures of the columns
