Satire
Is the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule

to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices.


Example: The Daily Show with John Stewart

Metaphor
A comparison of two different things not using like

or as.
Example: A Broken Heart- The persons heart is not

literally broken, it simply means that the person is saddened or hurt

Hyperbole
The use of exaggeration for effect. Examples: Its raining cats and dogs! , Ive told

you a million times!, I had a ton of homework last night.

Soliloquy
An act of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by

oneself or regardless of any hearers. Mostly used by a character in a play. Example: Shakespeares Hamlet, to be Or not to be That is the question!

Allegory
A story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to

reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one. It can be considered as an extension of a metaphor. (See slide 3 for the definition of metaphor) Example in Herman Melvilles novel Moby Dick.

The conflict that occurs between Ahab and the whale is a metaphor for the relationship that man has with God.

Alliteration
The repetition of similar words or sounds in

succession or groups of words.


Examples: How much wood, could a woodchuck

chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck would.

antagonist
A character created to go against the protagonist.

Also known as the Bad guy.

protagonist
The main character of the novel, play, or epic. Also

known as the Good Guy.

climax
The highest and most exciting part within a story.

Foreshadowing
Hints that imply what will happen later on in the

story.
Example: In Shakespeares Macbeth, the three

witches in the introduction chant, 'Double, double toil and trouble, which gives the audience a hint of what events will unfold.
