Kyle Townsend Colonization to Independence Social Studies 8th Grade -The historical focus continues in the eighth grade with the study of European exploration and the early years of the United States. This study incorporates all four social studies strands into a chronologic view of the development of the United States. Students examine how historic events are shaped by geographic, social, cultural, economic and political factors.

Technology -Students will create original works as means of personal expression. Standard(s): -Students will communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple
audiences using a variety of media and formats.

Time Required: 10- 1 hour class periods


25 Students 4 Slow readers 3 Gifted or Above Average Learners 2 Students without Microsoft Office The goal of this lesson is to get the students to have a full understanding about how/why people came to the Americas (presented in a powerpoint) and how/why the Revolutionary War came about (2 page essay).

Differentiation
-Use computer lab for students who dont have a computer or Microsoft Office. -Use the video to help slow readers get a good summary of the lesson. -Pair the gifted students with other students in the PowerPoint

presentation assignment.

-Have video ready -Save Powerpoint examples to computer -Post essay format on Schools website -Post example of essay -Secure time in the schools computer lab

Lesson Procedures Utilize media and materials (Procedures)


Day 1-3: Hand out Powerpoint presentation rubric, get students into groups, read chapter 3 in the History book, and lecture on the discovery and colonization of the Americas. Day 4-6: read chapter 4 in the History book about the causes/consequences of the Revolutionary war, discuss in class about some causes/consequences, and watch the video. Also, begin writing essay. Day 7: Prepare for Powerpoint presentation. Day 8: Present the Powerpoints to the class. Day9: Preparation for test and continue writing essays. Day 10: Take test and turn in essays (extra time may be given for essays). -Create a Powerpoint of the discovery of the Americas and the colonization. -Write an essay about the causes and consequences of the Revolutionary War. -Research the internet and the History book.
