Identify topics anything that involves an organized body of knowledge Specify learning goals what you want students to understand about the topic. Some goals will be content-related, some will be in the domain of critical thinking Prepare data consider using a matrix, possibly with pictures, to organize the material Specify questions youll ask these during the lesson. This may require a lot of planning the first few times until anticipation becomes more natural

Open-ended phase can be done in one of two ways: Ask students to observe and consider a cell matrix Ask students to look for similarities and differences in some of the cells Casual phase students attempt to identify similarities and differences they noticed in the first phase. Be prepared to guide with why questions Hypothetical phase begin asking nextlevel questions. Once the whys have been exhausted, ask what-ifs Closure and application go back over the main ideas that are most essential for students to remember. Have students apply what they have learned to new situations Phases 2-4 may be done in another order as necessary, but phase 1 should always come first

Multiple choice or writtenresponse questions may be used to assess content knowledge. These questions should contain multiple items that span the body of knowledge taught and measure students abilities to analyze relationships For assessing critical-thinking, similar questions may be used, but consider a greater emphasis on inferencemaking. Questions that involve selecting the best answer rather than the right answer are good here

Student involvement is highly emphasized Phase one is open-ended and low-pressure Phase 3 uses challenge as a motivator Cooperation may be used as a motivator. Students can work together to answer questions and gather information

So what? What is important to understand about this?

The integrative model can be used to promote knowledge of broad sections of content and exercise critical thinking. Additionally, the use of matrices is highly beneficial to visual learners.
