Lesson Plan Day Two: Eliminating the Competition

Context: This lesson focuses on searching and collecting information about big businesses and organized labor. The lesson introduces several important historical figures. The students will connect the material they find online to questions that are asked of them. It is important for students to see how people could eliminate competition in a huge system economy that America has. It is crucial for students to gain the ability to inquire information on their own and pick out key points from a lot of text.

Instructional Procedure/Steps

Warm up: Come up with a quick invention. Tell us why it is important. How it is used. How it improves daily life. Draw a quick sketch if you can? [6 minutes] 1. Discuss answers and have volunteers show us their drawings. Bridge: Who is Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller? [3 minutes] b. Show the students pictures of these figures. 1. Ask students if they know who either of the men are and what they did for the Industrial Revolution. 2. Students will also be learning about women and children in the workplace, and big businesses during the time period. Activity: Lets Find Out [30 minutes] e. The students will be given a list of possible sites to use to explore who Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller are. The other information will be filled in as well. The students can use other websites but I will be walking around to make sure they are appropriate. 1. The students will be writing this information in their notebooks. 2. Questions they are required to answer include: 1. What did they men do? 2. Who disliked them? 3. Who liked them? 4. What were conditions in the workplace like? 5. What were the roles of women and children? 6. Was it dangerous? 7. What happened to big businesses? 8. After the students have finished finding the information, we will talk about it as a class and I will ask if any students missed any information. 9. I will also show a picture of the workplace with women and children in it. Conclusion: Wrap up [5 minutes] 1. Wrap up all conversation and discuss any interesting findings. Homework: Go over notes and answer this question. [3 minutes] 1. What business tactic did Rockefeller use to eliminate competition?

Evaluation: I will assess my instruction through several tactics. The first will be if the students write down their warm up and try to answer the question. I will informally assess them by asking for volunteers to give their answers. I will also walk around the room to check if students are researching to find information. I will check to see if students are taking notes and if they contribute to class finding discussion. My last assessment will be counting their homework question for completion.

Accommodations: My students with IEP and 504 plans do not need any accommodations for this lesson.
