ESSENTIAL II Essential II The AACN essential for Leadership for Quality and safety is Essential II: Basic Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Care and Patient Safety. This essential

outlines how organizational leaders promote and institute measures to improve safety and quality care. In doing so, it shows the different ways to be a leader and how to get the most from staff. Leadership skills are needed that emphasize ethical and critical decision making, initiating and maintaining effective working relationships, using mutually respectful communication and collaboration within interprofessional teams, care coordination, delegation, and developing conflict resolution strategies(AACN 13). This leads to improved patient and staff safety. Baccalaureate graduates will understand and use quality improvement concepts, processes, and outcome measures. In addition, graduates will be able to assist or initiate basic quality and safety investigations assist in the development of quality improvement action plans and assist in monitoring the results of these action plans (AACN 13). This includes implementing leadership theories, using effective communication, applying the quality improvement process and to participate in creative measures to implement quality care. Assignment The creative implementation of leadership project was completed. This assignment was designed to have the students show their leadership qualities through creating a fictitious healthcare facility and describe how one would create a facility that would function successfully. The assignment encouraged students to think of how they would assume leadership roles, create and sustain accountability within the facility. It made students think of how they would be accountable for providing quality care through accreditation.

ESSENTIAL II Reflection This assignment fulfills the essential by being able to apply leadership concepts, skills, and decision making in the provision of high quality nursing care, healthcare team coordination, and the oversight and accountability for care delivery in a variety of settings (AACN 14). This project discusses how one will create a team, become a successful leader using their personality strengths. The disaster plan portion of the assignment shows quality team coordination. Accountability is discussed by using The Joint Commission as the accrediting body. The project also discusses having committees. Some of the committees listed were the Quality and Safety committee; evidence-based practice; infection control; patient education committee. These committees are formed to improve the potential in providing high quality care for patients.
