Essential VIII Daniel DeLauter Frostburg State University

ESSENTIAL VIII Essential VIII The AACN essential for Elements of the Professional Nursing Role is Essential VIII: Professionalism and Professional Values. This essential outlines the issues that concern professional nursing. Professionalism is defined as the consistent demonstration of core values evidenced by nurses working with other professionals to achieve optimal health and wellness outcomes in patients, families, and communities by wisely applying principles of altruism, excellence, caring, ethics, respect, communication, and accountability (Interprofessional

Professionalism Measurement Group, 2008) (AACN 27). In other words, this essential outlines the professional nurses ability to incorporate all disciplines of healthcare in order to give the patient the best and wholistic care. This term is used to identify that all aspects of a patients situation needs to be addressed in order for wellness. Assignment The Professional Theory assignment was completed which discussed the importance of treating patients in systematic way. Outlines of two different nursing theories, Roys adaptation Model and Orems self-care deficit model were explained. Each theory gives a way for nurses to have a different perspective in order to give care. Essentially the two theories have the same core values present. They are to treat physiologic problems first and have stability and then educate the patient by taking into account the specifics of individual situations. This shows respect to the patients, altruism, and autonomy to provide care to the patient as needed. Reflection This assignment applies the principles of Essential VIII. excellent communication with other disciplines and the patient. It also shows the requirement for nurses to have respect for the patients situation, altruism for all people. Caring as related to this Essential encompasses the nurses empathy for, connection to, and being with the patient, as well as the ability to translate these affective characteristics into compassionate, sensitive, and patient centered care (AACN 27). For example, Roys Adaptation Model focuses stressors in a persons life that may impede on wellness. It is the nurses responsibility to observe those stressors and educate the patient in an understanding manner of ways to limit stressor and how that may improve their health.
