STANDARD 3. OBSERVING, DOCUMENTING, AND ASSESSING TO SUPPORT YOUNG CHILDREN AND FAMILIES Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that child observation, documentation, and other forms of assessment are central to the practice of all early childhood professionals. They a) know about and understand the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment. They b) know about and use systematic observations, documentation, and other effective assessment strategies c) in a responsible way, d) in partnership with families and other professionals, to positively influence the development of every child. (Naeyc, 2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:

As part of my ECED 103 Curriculum Early Childhood course during the fall semester I had to do an observations to understand positively influence the development of every child. I had to do an observation on behavior so I could learn how to use effective assessment strategies. A child does not always listen to their teacher or does not want to the activity that is being done. Children do not always calm down when you want them to and all children have their own way of calming down. Sometime you have to let them figure out their temper on their own but you do have to try. Teachers do try things to calm the child down like giving them a job to do or a way the child could earn a snack. The class I did my observation in was a behavior class and a lot of times no matter what she did so say at the end they would calm their self-down.

Analysis of What I Learned:

I learned when you become a teacher you have to be patient with children. Children families are different from one another and you could never know what that child may be going through. They are ways you can try to find help for children even if you or the parent may not know how. I know that I should never give up on a child if they are having behavior issues. As a teacher you have to make sure you document what the child may be doing so when you do find help you can describe everything that you see day to day. I would set a goal for the child so the child could still learn even with his behavior issue.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

During my observation I had to document everything that child and teacher was doing. The teacher tried hugging him and talking to him but nothing worked. The child calm his selfdown better than she did and the child came back to class.
