Genre #1: PowerPoint (problem)

a. A PowerPoint would be useful because the audience, the civic organization, would most likely prefer that the information to be presented to a large group of people in an orderly manner. PPT is organized, and people know what to expect when the presenter is finished speaking about a slide. The layout is predictable and the message is arranged in an organized fashion. At this point, all the audience is responsible for is paying attention and taking notes. A PPT suits the educated audience better than a poem, for example. Sharing information on how the community can improve itself in regards to violence against women is not a matter that deserves to be rhymed, that has iambic pentameter, or includes alliteration. The presentation of the facts are clearer in a PPT than in a ballad, for example. People know right away the topic to be discussed when the PPT comes on the screen. With a poem, there is a quest for meanings and truth. b. The audience is a civic organization/advocacy group/nonprofit organization. c. The message is conveyed through bulleted lists on multiple slides. The information is kept brief so as not to drown the audience in reading too many words on one slide. It hits the main points, which allows for the presenter to share with the audience of the missing pieces. PowerPoints generally flow in chronological order. For the particular issue of how violence against women is a socially constructed occurrence, this PPT will follow this order: historical background problem solution. d. The solution to the problem is also expressed on a PPT slide. It will be a brainstorming slide that presents different alternatives. The presenter will have the community ponder

Genre #2: Childrens book (solution)

a. It is known that young boys who are witnesses to or victims of abuse at home will most likely perpetuate the violence as grown adults. A childrens book targets children and will help them realize what it means to have a healthy relationship with ones father. Childrens books are designed to communicate lessons to young boys and girls, and because that is the audience, it is effective to convey a message through this genre. Young children may not understand the concepts of some of the other genres because they are too complex for that age group. They are accustomed to childrens books and know the format of them. b. The audience is young children, around aged four to ten. c. The message is conveyed through sentences that simplify the loving relationships that should be present between a father and his son and a father and mother, as well as pictures that show affection, love, and understanding rather than violence, yelling, and quick tempers. Of course the relationship between mother and son should be characterized by love and trust too, but the social issue is generally about young boys witnessing their father physically abusing their mom, or the father abusing the son. d. The solution is expressed through the storyline of a father acting in a responsible, loving way towards his son. The plot illustrates that when a child is not exposed to trauma in the home, he is more likely to have a happy and healthy childhood. The books shows that these families exist and that children deserve to be treated well and see their parents treating each other well, too. e. The assumption is that children will understand that the

The assumption here is that all members of the civic organization are literate and will take this issue seriously. When one hears the words civic organization, one may assume that the members are people in high positions of power who have exemplary leadership skills. However, a civic organization may be incompetent of taking on such a big issue if they just started their work in the community.

context of this story ties into a bigger social issue. However, this is unlikely, so the parents may want to explain it to their children when they are old enough to understand that not every family unit is stable and functional.

Genre #3: Editorial (solution)

a. Editorials are present in every newspaper, and the news is readily accessible and distributed in large quantities. It is important for the public to hear different opinions on a social issue. Reading other perspectives helps people to form their own opinions. In order to form an opinion, one must be educated. Therefore, seeing a thought-provoking editorial in the paper can motivate people to become educated on the topic of discussion and thus take a position. An editorial is a good choice of genre because it will appear in a newspaper, and newspapers are a common way that many people learn what is happening in the world around them. For a social issue such as violence, it is important for the public to hear different viewpoints on it. The persuasion, critique, or analysis in the editorial Other genres, although they may involve the written word, do not appear both in a widely distributed publication and offer a strong argument. b. The editorial is focused on young men, but the audience will be the general population that reads newspapers. The message that the editorial is trying to convey is the negative effects of funneling emotions. It is directed at men so that they might see it as acceptable to feel vulnerable and to express their feelings of doubt and insecurity sometimes.

This editorial is designed to address a current issue with the socialization of men and the effects of bottling up anger, and put it out there that vulnerability isnt necessarily a bad quality. c. The message in an editorial is conveyed through a persuasive tone. It provides some history and offers a strong viewpoint. The persuasion is effective because it pulls on the readers pathos. d. The solution to male violence is expressed by addressing one of the roots of the problem: the funneling of emotion. The editorial tries to engages men and tell them that it is acceptable to show emotion, even if it comes in the form of trepidation or insecurity. Showing emotion is better in the long term because it fosters good relationships. A relationships grows when each partner feeds off the others strengths as well as weaknesses. e. The assumption is that the majority of people read the newspaper and will take a look at the editorials. However, it is also true that many people skim through the paper, only reading the titles and bolded print. They may skip past the actual body of the editorial. This genre was used with the intent that many people would read it just because it is in the newspaper, but it also assumes that the newspaper is a popular medium to share current events with the public when this age is characterized much more by social networking.
