The Lincoln Lowdown

2013-2014 School Year Quarter 1

A Great Start!
Its hard to believe that were already finished with the 1st Quarter! This school year has been filled with so many amazing learning opportunities we have some highlights on the backside of this newsletter. One of the most notable and exciting changes this school year has been our movement to a standards-

referenced report card . This style of report card focuses on learning objectives rather than letter
grades. A standards-referenced report card allows teachers to measure student learning based on the Iowa Core Curriculum. This way, we can effectively see where each student is at, individually, and tailor our instruction to meet his or her needs. With letter grades, if a student receives a C in math, all we know is that they have a C. With standardsreferenced reports, we can specifically identify and report out on student needs in each component of math (geometry, number-sense, numbers and operations, etc.). Our focus at Lincoln has always been student learning and growth, and our new report cards will be a great way for us to share all of the learning that takes place. I encourage you to talk to your childs teacher to learn more about standardsRemember that o ur sc hool suppo Healthy Ki rts the ds Act. We encourage snacks whe healthy n sending them to sc hool.

Preschool/Pre-K: A New School

Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten students are experiencing school for the first time! There is so much to learn, so many places to see, and so many friends to make! Coming up at the end of October, students will be Trickor-Treating at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center. How exciting for students and patients!

Kindergarten: Get Ready, Dads!

The kindergarten students have been busy preparing for their annual

Dads Breakfast. The breakfast will be held on Friday, October 25, beginning at 7am. Breakfast
will be served, and a musical performance will be given to dads of our kindergarteners.

1st Grade: The Native Way

Our school welcomed Frank Arciniega, grandfather of first grade twins Hampton and Annaliese, to talk about and demonstrate the Apache culture. He captivated everyones attention when talking, dancing, and sharing. Arciniega has been coming to Lincoln for many years, and its always a treat for 1st grade!

2nd Grade: Friends of Firemen

A couple of weeks ago was National Fire Prevention Week. As such, the Osage Volunteer Fire Department became very involved in our school day. On Friday of that week, the firemen came to share with the 2nd graders how they are friendly, no matter what they look like in all their gear. They followed up the presentation with a water-canon demonstration!

3rd Grade: What a Variety

In one section, students are learning using a practical, real-world experience: Mini-Economy. Students are given money or tallies and are exposed to stocks, taxes, insurance, loans, and even a Friday Farmers Market! In another section, students learned about maps; then they created their own maps of Osage, completely personalized! Lastly, students are learning about our own solar system by researching facts on each planet. They even used their iPads to check out a 3D image of rovers exploring space!

4th Grade: Walking on Water

The 4th grade students have had many opportunities to learn in science. Theyve taken a field trip for Farm Safety Day, as well as invited Jenny Sullivan from the Mitchell County Farm Bureau. In a lesson from Sullivan, students learned how water bugs walk on the surface of the water by experimenting with paperclips!
