Word classes: nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.

There are eight different kinds of word in English:

Note: word classes are also known as Parts of speech Note: Some words can belong to different classes depending on how they are used in a sentence: We dont work on Saturday morning. (verb) Ill be at work tomorrow. (noun)

Sentence structure: subject, verb, object, etc.


The most important parts of a sentence are the subject, verb, object, complement and adverbial. A statement begins with the subject and the verb.

There are five main structures which we can use to make a simple statement:
1. Subject verb Something happened. 2. subject verb object I need a rest 3. Subject verb complement It was a big problem. 4. Subject verb adverbial Their house is nearby. 5. Subject verb object object David bought Melanie a present

The subject and object can be a pronoun or a noun phrase. The complement can be an adjective or a noun phrase. The complement often comes after be. The complement often comes after appear, become, get, feel, look, seem, stay, or sound. An adverbial can be a prepositional phrase or an adverb. We can add adverbial to all the five main structures.
