OBSERVING PERFORMANCE Building Success

The whole problem can be stated quite simply by asking "Is there a meaning to music?" My answer would be, "Yes", and "Can you state in so many words what the meaning is?" My answer to that would be "No." Aaron Copland

Building Success
Building Success is a program of activities and exercises integrated into ARCH1101. The program is predicated upon UNC Charlotte's Prospect for Success, a University-wide initiative aimed at enriching the freshman experience, and enhancing the chances for successful integration into the rigors of college life. Building Success comprises activities and exercises. Students will encounter a series of workshops and screenings, and will attend events, either as a group, or indepently. In turn, they will complete short written exercises that ask them to reflect on these exercises, for both their content, and the potential learning opportunities that they represent. Building Success is designed to foster a sense of discovery for students in their first year of architectural studies. More generally, the program enhances awareness of resources on campus provided to students to improve their academic performance and long-term professional aspirations. As well, it offers to open students to the amazing range of cultural and intellectual pursuits that surround them on campus, and in the Charlotte region.

Assignment One
Each student is asked to select and attend one or more performances or exhibition openings during the fall semester, and write a short response to the event(s). Students have been provided with a calendar of events for this semester, and are asked to select one of more events from that list. We advise avoiding choosing anything before mid-November, to avoid the end-of-semester crush. Attending more than one event will provide students with options from which to choose the subject of their written response.

The writing exercise

Each student must craft a written response to their experience. This writing exercise comprises three distinct but related sections. Students are asked to follow these instructions carefully:

Section 1: Introductory details

In this section, provide the basic details: name of performance or exhibition, name of artist or group represented (performer(s)/artist(s)), works performed (if any), date and location of performance or gallery opening. Please include an image - either an image of performance provided by way of College website or similar, or a photograph you take on night of gallery opening of exhibition (please set your camera for "no flash").

Section 2: Content
In 200 300 words, describe the content of the performance or exhibition. That is to say, describe the 'what'. What works were performed? Who composed, wrote, or choreographed the original work? Is this composer(s)/ playwright(s)/choreographer(s) known for other works?

Section 3: Reflection
In 200 300 words, reflect on your experience. What did you learn? Did this performance or exhibition expose you to this art form for the first time? If you have some experience with this form of performing or visual art, did it expand your awareness of the field? What did this experience reveal to you about the presence of the arts at UNC Charlotte? How might this and related experiences affect your development as a designer? *Note: you are not expected to answer all of the above questions - this list is provided as a set of examples from which to suggest how you might approach this section. Develop your response carefully, taking the time and effort to edit and revise a well-crafted work of writing. This assignment is Due Monday, December 2 at 12 noon. A specific Building Success upload area has been set up at the bottom of the ARCH1101 Moodle page. We ask you to submit this assignment in PDF file format.
