STANDARD IV: Professional Knowledge and Competence

STANDARD IV: Professional Knowledge and Competence C. Professionalism with Colleagues and other Professionals
2. Early Childhood Educators build a climate of trust, honesty and respect in the workplace. They respect the privacy of colleagues and handle information with an appropriate level of confidentiality. Early Childhood Educators support experienced colleagues, those who are new to the profession and those students aspiring to the profession.

Artifact: Pledge of Confidentiality This standard of practice is key for building and maintaining healthy, trustworthy relationships with colleagues and families. I use this standard of practice on a daily basis, whether it be in conversation with my peers or in my responsive plans, through maintaining privacy I am able to use information and observations captured, in order to help me plan appropriately for the various families that attend the program. The standard relates back to my course work that I have done in my Observation and Role of an Educator classes at Humber college, which have taught me that in order to plan responsively I must be able to be unbiased and respectful to each persons needs. By using anonymous names for people , for example, Child A or Teacher B, etc. while completing my responsive program planning, I utilize the information and observations gained, to plan responsively while maintaining a level of respect and confidentiality with colleagues and families. Over the past several weeks I have been observing children; talking with families and my colleagues, about planned experiences that I believe help children in the development of different domains and skills. I use my prior knowledge which was gained through various courses in the Early Childhood Education program at Humber College. Through my written observations, I maintain confidentiality to reflect and plan experiences that inhibit developmentally appropriate skills for children and the needs of families. This particular artifact that I am reflecting on today ensures that as a student, aspiring to be an Early Childhood Educator, I maintain respect and privacy for families and colleagues. My artifact is the Pledge of Confidentiality, which is signed by me (student) to ensure that any and all information and observations that I write or talk about whether it be in my responsive plans or in everyday conversation with anyone, names are not disclosed to protect the integrity and privacy of those involved. Through everyday interactions with parents, caregivers, colleagues and children, I gain knowledge and information which I utilize in my planning responsively.

Through conversation with my colleagues, parents/ caregivers and children I am able to ask questions that allow for me to respond responsively to their needs and wants. In doing so, I remain strictly confidential, by not using real names of people, in order to maintain respectful and for the dignity of the parties involved. I utilize my knowledge from my course work and experience gained in the field prior to this placement, through the use of the responsive planning template I can observe, reflect, plan and following up. My intention in providing these experiences and resources for families is in hopes that they can utilize these materials to their benefit. Although, I may plan an experience for one child or one family, it is not to say that others may not benefit from it. Through the different prompts in my responsive plans, my supervising teacher can get an understanding of my growth and professional development, without me having to disclose names of people in my responsive planning. As well as, as in everyday conversation with my peers and/or colleagues I can discuss different things that I have observed without breeching my pledge of confidentiality. .
