GTSTRUDL 32 - Student Edition 13

Quick-Start Instructions
Windows 7*/Vista*/XP

*Important: Before installing the Student Edition 13 on Windows 7 or Windows Vista: Turn off the User Account Control (go to Control Panel/User Accounts)

1.

Download GTSTRUDL Student Edition 13 from the following location: www.gtstrudl.ce.gatech.edu/gtstrudlse13 Double click on the self-extracting file: GTStrudlSE13.exe Select: Run > Setup > Next Follow the next instructions

2.

From the Windows Start Menu: Start > Programs > GTStrudl Student Edition 13 > GTStrudl Student Edition 13 Select: OK on the pop-up which describes the size limitations in the Student Edition.

3.

From the GTStrudl Startup Wizard Dialog: Using the Browse Button, provide a path to the folder that you will utilize to save GTSTRUDL text input command files, output files, and other related files. Select: OK to display the GTSTRUDL command/menu/text output window.

4.

For your convenience we have provided a folder containing example problems (shown in #6 below). To open the example problem text files of commands from the GTSTRUDL command/menu/text output window, go to the tool bar and: Select: Tools > Macros > Getting Started Examples ** then, you have the following options: Select an Example File name and then Select: 1. Edit > No which will open the file in Notepad, or 2. Run Macro which will cause GTSTRUDL to process the commands, or 3. Double click on an Example File name will cause GTSTRUDL to process the commands ** Recommendation: Before trying to create a structural model using the GTMenu Graphical User Interface, you should OPEN one of the example problems listed in # 6 below (make a copy of these files and save them to a folder of your choice). You can test out the capabilities of GTMenu by using the commands and data in the these text files. Do not modify the original example problem files.

5.

After all input commands are processed within the GTSTRUDL command/menu/text output window, go to the tool bar: Select: Modeling > Graphical Modeling (GTMenu) The GTMenu graphical user interface will display the model you have selected and the analysis results. From this point you can try various GTMenu features (i.e., results, view, inquire, zoom, redraw solid, split members, print, preview, edit....).

6.

The following 15 example problems are described In the Getting Started Manual - Chapter 6. Select: Help > Reference Documentation > Getting Started Help > Reference Documentation > Analysis User Guide

Note: It is important to note that several of the example problems exceed the problem size permitted by the Student Edition. These are Example problems 12 and 13. 7. You may create a GTSTRUDL command file which includes commands and data that describe a structure model to be analyzed and designed using the Notepad text editor. You may then import the text command file that you created so that GTSTRUDL will process the commands and data by selecting: File > Open or by typing commands in the command bar, or by using the GTMenu GUI to create a model graphically.

GTSTRUDL Step-by-Step Demos

The following two Demos are PowerPoint files and should not be opened from the GTSTRUDL command/menu/text output window. Tutorial #1 From the Windows Start Menu: Start > Programs > GTStrudl Student Edition 13 > Online Documentation > Tutorial #1 This PowerPoint Demo #1 demonstrates the use of the Model Wizard to create a simple Plane Frame structure using a predefined modeling template, and then using the GTMenu graphical user interface to display the structure and analysis results.

Tutorial #2 From the Windows Start Menu: Start > Programs > GTStrudl Student Edition 13 > Online Documentation > Tutorial #2 This PowerPoint Demo #2 demonstrates the use of the GTMenu Graphical User Interface to create a simple Plane Truss structure, and then using GTMenu to display the structure and analysis results.

GTSTRUDL DOCUMENTATION
GTSTRUDL user documentation is provided in PDF formatted manuals. These manuals can be viewed by selecting from the GTSTRUDL command/menu/text output window tool bar: Help > Reference Documentation > manual name

The manual names and descriptions corresponding to a few of the user manuals are listed below: a. Getting Started User Guide: Describes the menu options in the menu bar of the GTSTRUDL command/menu/text output window , and contains various tutorials showing the use of the GTMenu Graphical User Interface, and showing the use of command/data text files (the GTSTRUDL Release Guide - Volume 2 describes additional such examples). b. Analysis User Guide: Describes the more commonly used basic features of GTSTRUDL in regard to structure modeling, linear static and linear dynamic frame and finite element analysis, and text input and output. c. Design User Guide: Describes the more commonly used steel and reinforced concrete frame design features of GTSTRUDL. d. GTSTRUDL Release Guide - Volume 1: Describes new features in GTSTRUDL 32, error corrections, known errors, and prerelease features. e.
