There are three parts to planning a D.I. Model: 1. Identify Topic: Have a topic that teaches your students a procedural skill, or rather, a skill that has a specific set of operations, can be illustrated with countless examples, and can be developed through practice.
There are four phases to implementing a D.I. Model: -Phase 1: Intro and Review: Introduce the lesson and review prior understanding. -Phase 2: Presentation: Present explain, and illustrate the new skill and use high quality examples. -Phase 3: Guided Practice: Have the students practice the skill under your guidance. -Phase 4: Independent Practice: Have your students practice the skill on their own.
To assess your students, give them a problem that needs solving that relates to the topic and objectives of the lessons. You can also give them homework on the lesson that may change things up a little that may make your students think outside of the box to find the answers.
2. Specify Learning Objectives: Specify what you want your students to learn from the lesson. 3. Select Examples and Problems: Examples are essential for helping students initially understand the skill. Problems are what students need for practice to develop automaticity and promote transfer.
Students can become motivated if they understand the topic by transferring information that they already know from other areas into this lesson. Also, if you make the lesson more relatable to your students with examples that they would enjoy, they will be more willing to engage in the lesson.
The D.I. Model is a model that teaches a skill to your students and allows them to master it through examples and practice.
