Rutherford English 10 Period 2 November 6, 1013 Good Samaritan Essay The term Good Samaritan could be defined as somebody who helps a person they do not know without expecting any gains or benefits. There are various occasions where people are like that; they become very helpful for a situation. For example, a girl is being bullied, the only thing the girl can think of is for someone to come up and help her. Here is where a Good Samaritan comes and helps her get out of that situation. For every good action like in the example, there is always a motivation for it. There are a lot of motivations for people to do good actions like, to make you proud of yourself or to feel heroic. Every good action starting from a good motivation makes you a Good Samaritan. When choosing to be a Good Samaritan there are always benefits and costs that come into thought, but in any way one will outweigh the other. Some may argue the costs of being a Good Samaritan outweigh the benefits; this is based on real life experiences that show how people risk their life for others. On the other hand, I truly believe the benefits of being a Good Samaritan outweigh the costs, this means we should be Good Samaritans because we can have the benefit of saving someones life and feeling proud about it, and we could gain internal benefits. If a situation is presented where a person is need of help, the benefit of being a Good Samaritan is to save someones life and feeling proud about it. That is what happened to Autrey

Morales 2 when he saved a mans life, A day after he saved the life of a young man down onto the tracks by pushing him into a gap between the railsI did something to save someones life, Autrey said(Los Angeles Times Article, pg 1). Jumping in front of an upcoming train might have not been the best thing to do, but it was the first thing that came up t Autreys mind when he saw Hallopeter laying on the rails. After his heroic action, he felt very proud of himself. Here it shows the benefit of being a Good Samaritan is that by doing a good action, lie saving a persons life, you can feel proud, recognized, and important, about it. Being a Good Samaritan could also bring you internal gains. The story And of Clay we are Created is about Rolf, a reporter, helping Azucena to get out of a mud pit, there, they got to know each other. After spending a couple of days with her, Rolf realized he was Azucena also stuck in a mud pit filled with his dark past. Towards the end this is what happened, Both were saved from despair, how they were freed from the clayhow together they flew above the vast swamp of corruption and laments(Allende, 265). At the end Rolf was relieved from his past and was able to accept death, due to the reflection through Azucena wanting to get out of the mud pit. Also Azucena was able to accept death by surrounding her fight of wanting to get out the pit, as well with the fight of Rolf. Even though Azucena died, Rolf was a Good Samaritan by being there for her and helping her try to get out. Here the benefit of being a Good Samaritan is that by doing good actions you could also gain internal/personal gains like Rolf did, by freeing himself from the past. From another point of view, other may believe the costs of being a Good Samaritan outweigh the benefits, this, based on real life experiences like people risking their life for others. The article Man in the Water it talks about a plane crash that has let people to the struggle to survive. A man known as The Man in the Water, risked his life to save the other surviving

Morales 3 people, The man in the water pitted himself against an implacable, impersonal enemy; he fought it with charity; and held and held it to a standoff(Rosenblatt, 2). Like every other person in the plane, the man was desperate to live, but he felt like he needed to do something, so he followed his instincts. Instead of keeping it safe for himself, he passed the safety to the other survivors. The man in the water had the choice whether or not to help the other people. The power of nature gives us the choice to choose between things we can or should do. The man in the water knew the circumstances he was in, but he still decided to help the others with his most positive attitude, that is what makes his act stunning. This shows that humans are always aware of the circumstances they are in when doing good actions, and are willing to risk everything, even their life, to make their action to be possible, all with a good attitude. People may believe that being a Good Samaritans is bad because they are risking their life, but Samaritans are aware of what they are doing and their purposes, that at the end it will be beneficial to others. In conclusion, the benefits of being a Good Samaritan outweigh the costs because it could make your self esteem go up by saving a persons life and it could benefit you with personal gains. We should all become Good Samaritans because by that, we could make a positive impact on the world. It might not be a big impact or it might, but in any way your good action will affect the world or could influence a persons life. Being Good Samaritans will make us better persons and will influence the world to be a better place to live in.
