Taske, C., & Plude, F. (2011). Experiencing social media across generations. Media Development, 58 (1), 38-41.

My first article is Experiencing Social Media Across Generations, it is about how technology has revolutionized in a very short amount of time. The article talks a lot about email and how Facebook has done a lot to take email a step further by creating Facebook messaging. It stores everyones messages in one box and is organized better then email websites some may think. One of the authors stated, Email no longer meets my needs, it is to slow and formal (Tauske, 38). This is very true many people who grew up in the 1990s knows all there was to communicate digitally was email before all the social networking. My research question involves the affect of social media on different generations and this is a great article filled with information. This article also talked a lot about how we are a digital generation (Tauske, 38). We communicate in the open where as before it was more private through email. This is a great article that points out how popular email once was and how great of an idea to communicate digitally, now methods have expanded and become a lot more public.

Chase, S. (1965). Changes in public opinion and attitudes between generations. Public Opinion Quarterly, 29 (3), 357.

My second article is called Changes in Public Opinion and Attitudes Between Generations. This article discusses a change in behavior patterns, common manners, and a belief system such as a type of religion. How people are loosing their values they once lived by. Instead of interacting with people we see we now send text messages or talk to them through video chat. There is a large decline in social interaction with the younger generation of teenagers now because of the increase of popularity of social networking. This is another great article because it discusses how people once lived and raised their kids to how it is today. We are all aware how much technology is growing but its the pace it is growing at that makes people wonder what more can be done? Most importantly it is comparing generations of age groups, which is what my research question is focusing on.

Gumpert, G., & Cathcart, R. (1985). media grammars, generations, and media gaps. Critical Studies In Mass Communication, 2 (1), 23.

My third article is called Media Grammars, Generations, and Media Gaps. This article talks about how this generation is now learning and absorbing media grammar which some people may describe as slang words or even another type of language almost that is used only on social networking sites. The article describes how there is a large gap between generations of a level of intellectuality because younger generations are no longer reading through a dictionary to find a word, they Google it instead. People do not have a map in their car anymore they are either using a GPS or asking Siri. This is

3 another great article because it is pointing out very valid points that are often pushed to the side when new technology arises. Many people do not notice what type of impact this digital world is having on the younger generations and how this will affect the future.

Helsper, E. (2010). Gendered Internet use across generations and life stages. Communication Research, 37 (3), 352-374.

The fourth article is titled Gendered Internet Use Across Generations and Life Stages. This article is set up as a case study and includes graphs and summaries of the study. A main focus is on how the Internet is affecting gender. Since I will be interviewing both genders this is a really helpful and interesting article to read because it is already giving me information about what was observed and the differences that came out to be between the two genders and how the generations reacted different to the study results.

Hulsen, M., De Bot, H., & Weltens, B. (2002). Between two worlds. Social networks, language shift, and language processing in three generations of Dutch migrants in New Zealand. International Journal Of The Sociology Of Language, 152 (1), 27-52.

My last article is titled Between Two Worlds; Social networks, language shift, and language processing in three generations of Dutch migrants in New Zealand. This article is another case study that took place in the country of New Zealand. The purpose of the

4 study was to compare how social networking has altered the language, such as slang use, of individuals and how it was affecting there language processing. I will not be traveling to a different country and my study is not about language. However, the study was so interesting because they observed and saw differences between people who used social networking sites and those who did not. For the people who used the sites, their language processing grew much slower and almost less educational rather than those who did not use any social networking. The study also focused on individuals attitudes and how they have changed with the use of social networking. The study showed that with the each generation, as social networking and media increases, their processing and attitude level is declining. It was a very interesting study that I think relates to mine because I am focusing on the affect of social media between generations.
