Distributive Property!
Denition: Multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend by the number and adding the two products together.! Example: 6 x 57 = 6 x 50 + 6 x 7! or ! 6 x (50 + 7) = (6 x 50) + (6 x 7)! !

Associative Property of Addition & Multiplication!

! Denition: Changing the grouping of addends or factors does not change the sum or product.! ! Example: (4 + 2) + 10 = 4 + (2 + 10)!

Simplifying the Work:! expression!

4(7x -3) + 2x! Steps:!
1. Using the distributive property, distribute the 7x to 4 to get 28x. Then distribute the 4 to the negative 3 to get -12.! ! 2. Then combine the like terms 28x and 2x to get 30x.! ! 3. Now simply re-write your equation to 30x -12 ! !

Solving the equation!

7x-10-9x=-13!
Steps:! 1. The rst step in solving this equation is combining like terms. In this case it would be 7x and -9x.! ! 2. Now you re-write the equation to -10 2x = -13.! ! 3. The next step is subtracting -10 from each side to get -2x = -3.! ! 4. The nal step is un doing multiplication by dividing each step by -2. That would leave you with your nal answer, -1 1/5! ! !

Solving the equation!

5x/6 + x/3 " = 11/6!
Steps:! 1. The rst step is to nd common denominators, in this case its six, by multiplying each term by 6/1! ! 2. Now that each term is multiplied by 6/1, the equation can be simplied to 5x + 2x 3 = 11! ! 3. Combine like terms to further simplify the equation to 7x 3 = 11! ! 4. No you solve for x by adding 3 to each side as well as dividing each side by 7 to get your nal answer x = 2!

Solving the equation !

2 # x/-5!
Steps:! 1. To solve for x, you have to un-do division by multiplying each side by -5 and re-write the problem! ! 2. Because you are dividing with negative numbers, you must switch the the inequality sign to $ ! ! 3. To graph, draw a number line including 0 and -10. Now draw a an arrow pointing after the -10 with a full circle because -10 is part of the answer.!
