Moises Garcia Zapoteco English Expository Writing Maxine Patroni November 13, 2013 The Hell Next door? What does Mexico and United States have in common? Drugs and money. A two way system of underground economy has turned into a huge enterprise. These enterprise are not companies outbidding each other rather beheading ruthlessly. Mexican cartels are the most powerful criminal organizations in the world. With Drug profits estimated in the Billions, no wonder they will do anything to continue their power. They have become more powerful since the demise of the Colombian Cartels and now control up 90% of cocaine that enters the United States. It has turned a peasant man, now head of the Sinaloa cartel into one of the richest man in the world, according to Forbes magazine ranked el chapo Joaquin Guzman Loera, the shorty, his fortune estimate in 3 Billions. (Forbes) It was this kind of corruption that the New Mexican President saw to change when he declared war on organized Crime in 2006, he opened Pandoras Box unleashing a monster of violence as cartels began fighting against each other for control of the lucrative gateway into the United States number one consumption. Mexico is the new Afghanistan battlefront, a fight not against terrorism but against the demand of Drugs. The Mexican cartels have corrupted every level of government in Mexico and have begun to do the same over the border. Instead of applying the policy of containment, we ought to take a more drastic approach to the problem .An estimate of 40,000 people have been murdered since 2006 drug war began. (Mercille 1) How many more Mexicans need to die

because of American lust for Drugs? Rephrase the question: How many Americans must die before we take action? Corruption is borderless. Mexico supply the drugs and the United States sends weapons and drug profits back. It is estimated that 87% of weapons used by cartels come from the US (Mercille 7) For an instance, 144 Border patrols agents were found guilty of corruption, taking bribes from Mexican Cartels to let drugs pass and immigrants. (Lucas) The United States border is porous, anything and everything comes in and out if cartels have infiltrated the border then it is only a time when they to show violence. Mexico is country of impunity that means no crime goes punish. When these cartels cell began to infiltrate American cities, battles will erupt between rivals and show no mercy. It has been estimated that globally banks launder from $500 billion to $1 trillion every Year from criminal activities, half of which goes through US banks (Mercille ) Another clear example of corruption, The Deparment of Tabacco and Fire Arms set a plan, Fast and Furious send weapons south and track them and infiltrate cartel operations(warner 1) However, according the statement of the lawyer of arrested cartel operative They accused logistical coordinator for the Sinaloa organization, Vicente Zambala-Niebla, claimed that he had an agreement with to American officials. In exchange for information on rival cartels (New American ) Many will argue that the solution to the problem ultimately must come from Mexico but the United States must take control of the Situation and possibly consider an intervention in Mexico to solve the problem. If the expansion of Mexican drugs cartels continue has they done for much of Central America. That poses a real threat to American security and national interest are stake. The whole region will become unstable. The southern border does not belong to the Mexican government, all controlled by the cartels 2,000 miles of open terrain to operate. Since

9/11 Homeland security has drastically improved border security with more agents to protect the border so many will argue the solution is there. Militarization of the border to prevent drugs from coming in. I would agree but securing the southern frontier does not diminish the demand of drugs, it makes it more lucrative. It serves to regulate the market. So far the policy of containment has prevented most violence from spreading north. Therefore If we keep on fueling Mexicos Drug war with the consumption of drugs, things will certainly change. Once the major cartels have taken out their rivals and suppress the Mexican authority in the northern states of Mexico then It is eminent that violence will spread over the border Lead or silver Those that cannot be bought with money will be silenced with a bullet. It is crucial that America intervene before the hell door breaks loose and we suffer the consequences. The truth, Mexican government does not want get rid of drugs because just as the cartels see as powerful money making business instead it may be allied with one particular cartels, the Sinaloa cartel to and try to suppress the ruthless Zetas, public enemy because of horror and extreme violence they. It wants to create stability by any mean possible. What does this mean? The Mexican government is playing a role of a drug cartel! With the demand of drugs so high in the United states, legalization offers part of the solution., divert the profits from the cartels; However just like Walmart that offers lower prices in goods , does it mean the cartels will sell marihuana cheaper than domestic and perhaps more potent. ? Former drug cartel hit man stated as long the gringos keep asking for marihuana deaths will continue ( BCC Mexicos drug war)Mexican cartels have gotten so big that should the legalization of certain Drugs, particular marijuana offer a solution to the problem.

Mexico and the United States share a lot more in common than just drugs and money. The legitimate economy of both countries has strengthen the United States trading more than China, India or Canada. If we cynically keep applying the policy of containment and have the mentality that as long the violence does not expand North things will be fine. Will we wait until another Drug lord Billionaire shows up in the cover of our magazines and displays his wealth? Lets reduce the consumption of Mexican drugs tainted will blood and lets stop pretending the Mexican government can fix the problem alone on its own soil. I am asking not for another dragging military intervention like Afghanistan but a clear oversight of the problem in Mexico until they themselves have trained police and public institutions to combat the problem. The old saying still applies and resonates well today, Poor Mexico, so close to the United States and so far from God
