General Action Mucolytic Agent

Mechanism Of Action Breaks disulfide bonds in mucus and liquefies it, making it easier to cough up. It is also this action of breaking disulfide bonds that makes it useful in thinning the abnormally thick mucus in cystic and pulmonary fibrosis patients.

Chronic bronchitis Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) High fever Lung condition

Contraindicated to asthmatic patients or bronchospasm. Pregnancy and lactation, hypersensitivity with the drug.

Assess cough Assess cardiac status Frequent rinsing of mouth for dryness of oral cavity. Mix or dilute the 3ml N-Acetylcysteine with fruit juice 7, 12 or use soft drink before administering the drug. If patient has nausea or vomiting associated with this medication, medical officer should be consulted if antiemetics need to be given.

Report difficulty with clearing the airway or any other respiratory distress.
