Location: Classroom Unit: Provincial Government Lesson # within unit: 3 Topic: Provincial Government Responsibilities GLOs: 6.1 Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the dynamic relationship between governments and citizens as they engage in the democratic process. SLOs: 6.1.5 analyze the structure and functions of Albertas provincial government by exploring and reflecting upon the following questions and issues: What are the responsibilities of the provincial government (i.e., laws, taxes, Using these services)? (PADM) Intended Learning Outcomes (Learning Objectives): The students will be able to -Identify 5 services that the provincial government provides Alberta citizens in a graphic organizer -Identify 5 services that the Kainai Band Government provides for its citizens in a graphic organizer -Recognize that the Kainai Band Government is responsible for the same services as the provincial government Rationale: This lesson is important because the students need to understand the responsibilities of the provincial government. It is also important that, because they live on a reserve, they know that the band is responsible for the services that the provincial government provides to people living off the reserve. It is important that they are reaching the outcomes of the program of studies, but also that they are able to connect to the information on a personal level.

F. Procedure: Introduction: (5 minutes) 1. Ask: Does anyone remember what we are going to be learning for the next six weeks? Provincial Government 2. Go over the circles and explain where the provincial government fits. Explain that the provincial government is the next step up from the local government. 3. Go over the agenda for the day and go to the food for thought question. Have the students brainstorm ideas. 4. Ask the students to stand up and quickly and quietly go to the middle of the room. 5. Explain that I am going to ask them a few true or false questions and they will have to answer through moving to one wall in the classroom. a. If they believe that the answer is true they will move to the front of the room b. If the answer is false, they will move to the back of the room. 6. Present the following questions to the students (they will be on PowerPoint slides, so read them out) a. It is the provincial governments responsibility to provide education to all grade six students who live in Lethbridge. True/False b. The Kainai Band Council provides all of the same services as the Alberta provincial government to its band members? c. The provincial government provides services such as education, and healthcare to people living on the reserve? True/False

Body: (30 minutes) 7. Ask the students to grab a textbook from the side and return to their desk. 8. Ask the students to turn to page 130 in their textbook. Make sure that you write it on the board as well, so the students can see the numbers written out. 9. Ask: Which services did we talk about in our activity that you also see on the picture on page 130? Education, healthcare 10. Ask: What other services does the image say that the provincial government provides for Alberta? 11. Direct their attention to the graphic organizer on page 130. Explain that all of the branches off of the provincial government are services that the government provides/ what the government is responsible for. 12. Read pages 131-132 13. Have the students write: a. TITLE: WHY DO WE NEED A PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT? b. We need a provincial government to provide services to assist Albertans. A different government department is responsible

for each service. There are about 20 departments in the Alberta Government. The services that these departments provide include: Copy out the graphic organizer for their notebook. 14. Bring up the Network tree organizer:
The students really responded to the idea of the tribal government being like a mini Provincial Government. It gave them pride in the government that they see in their everyday life. I thought it was important that they knew that even though they are federally funded they still have all of the same services as everyone else in Alberta.

15. Explain that the Band on a reserve is like a mini provincial government within the province. Everything that the provincial government provides for people who live off the reserve, the band government provides for people living on the reserve. a. For example Alberta Education is in charge of education, on the reserve the Kainai Board of Education is in charge of education. They both do the same thing, but different people run them. 16. Ask: Who provides the services that you see on page 130 to you (Aboriginal People)? The Kainai Band Government 17. Hand out a copy of the graphic organizer to the students. 18. Explain that we are going to complete the first few as a class. a. Do the first 3 terms on their list with them, but ask for their feedback on where they think we should put them on the graphic organizer. 19. The students will have 5 minutes to work on their own, and when the timer goes off they must get up and find a partner to work with for 5 minutes, the timer will go off after 5 minutes and they must find a new partner to share and collaborate their work with. After the third time they should all have completed the assignment. (15 minutes) 20. Once the students are done they can put their worksheet into their folder.

Enrichment: Work on their review booklet, which will be a fill in the blank from the textbook. There will be a page for every lesson that is taught. In this lesson they will be focusing on page 130-132. Closure: (5 minutes) 21. Hand out exit slips to the students. 22. They are to answer the following question: a. Who plays a more important role in your life, the provincial government or the Kainai Band? Why?

Assessment/Evaluation: Formative: Their exit slip will be used to assess understanding of the responsibilities of the band government. Formative: True/false Kinesthetic Activity- This will show me if the students understand which services the provincial government provides and which they do not (local government services) Formative: Graphic organizer will be used to see if the students understand the responsibilities of the provincial government and their band government.
