A silent movie is a film that does not contain a soundtrack.

The first silent movies simply experimented on filming anything. But by the start of 1920s, the silent movies evolved into more elaborate film just like a well developed movie compared today. As the development of silent movies progressed, different plots and subject matters were integrated with these kinds of film. One of the features of a silent film is called inter-titles. These are like subtitles but it is a written dialogue or written text shown on the screen which details the plot so that people could understand the plot and actions. But an intense acting is still included in the silent movies to convey various emotions. Facial expressions and body languages are generally exaggerated. This system of a silent movie is considered by others as overacting. Though the actors look silly with their acting, it is required for this kind of film. Sometimes would turn out hilarious because actors are not used to talking on film. Theaters accompany live music in silent movies compared to just watching at home where the silent movie is very quiet. Although some movies had actual scores that were to be played throughout each moment of the film, few of these have survived. Some television re-broadcasts of silent films contains music, but it may take some modification to view a film that does not have music. Some silent movies of the past are really worth watching even without sound or music. Many of these silent movies (from the 19th century) feature people that are considered legends of comedy or the best. Watching Charlie Chaplin is really amusing without sound or music. Comedy did not dominate silent movies alone. There are very dramatic silent movies that captured viewers emotions just like the film Metropolis (1927) and horror silent movies like Nosferatu (1929) that scared people.
