Week 3: Focus on Maps and Climate

Lesson: Stanley World Travel Slide Shows Objective: This is the final lesson of the unit and is a summative assessment of the
Journeys unit of constructing a map with a map key, identifying the 7 continents, and the total Flat Stanley project.

Instructional Directions:
1. Begin the lesson with the following slide show about Flat Stanleys adventures. https://vimeo.com/38453307 2. Today is the last day of the unit and the class will be doing activity centers: The first center will be at the computers where the students will be working with the teacher to create animoto slide shows of their Flat Stanley project which will include pictures of all the letters they wrote, the pictures of their Flat Stanley as well as the pictures of his adventures, the screen shot of the world map with the Flat Stanley location and climate. The student will be able to choose the style of the slide show and music, make sure to tell the students it will be similar to the slide show they saw at the beginning of the class. The second center will be playing a Flat Stanley game on the iPad which has to do with maps

3. The last rotation will be constructing a map of their bedroom and include a map key.

4. Have the students do each rotation for about 20 minutes or at least until all the animoto videos are created. 5. After all the students have done each center have the ELMO on and ready to show the class all the animoto slide shows. Remind the students that they will all be posted on the class blog. 6. In closing for the unit, lead a whole class discussion about the Flat Stanley project and learning about how big the earth is with the 7 continents and 4 oceans. Then play the 7 continent beach ball game to review the names of the 7 continents and 4 oceans.
