Hours before the death of my husband he met with attorney Brian Figueroa to consider legal actions against Hume and the Grovin the Park promoters for personal assault and damages done to his equipment while he was covering the event, she revealed. In confirming the meeting with Eion, Figueroa told Street Hype that he was instructed to start legal proceedings against the organizers to recover the damages to his equipment. The widow confirmed that she recently filed a lawsuit for compensation of $5,000 in the Small Claims Courts of the Civil Court of the City of New York (Kings County) Brooklyn. Its been more than fifteen months since Mr. Hume physically abused my husband and damaged his equipment. The matter is still not settled despite the many promises, an angry widow with four children explained. Hume told Street Hype he was very surprised to learn about the lawsuit filed by Mrs. Saunders as the matter of compensating Eion for damages done to his camera was never in question. Up to the time of his death we were awaiting the proposal (quotations) as the first step to settle the matter. This was a very regretful situation for us. Eion was a true friend and a media partner for our event, he added. Continued on page 4

We believe politics is about satisfying the needs of the people in a community. We need political leaders and policy makers to manage the affairs of the communities and meet the needs its people. the most vulnerable in our communities. Cities and States should put in place facilities or provide adequate incentives for profit and nonprofit organizations to operate. Education is still the most important vehicle for social mobility and under Mayor Michael Bloomberg the city has embarked on a major school reform effort. But more work needs to be done as New York City struggles with disparity in its public school system, with some of the best and worst performing public schools in the United States. New York crime statistics report an overall downward trend in crime based on data from twelve years with violent crime and property crime decreasing. Based on this trend, the crime rate in New York for 2013 is expected to be lower than in 2010. However, ordinary people are not com-

New York Police Department officer, Richard Haste, who shot and killed unarmed 18-year-old Ramarley Graham was set free based on concerns about the way the grand jury was instructed by the Bronx District Attorney's office. We the people want politicians that support our mission to help New York to be become one of the top-ranking places to live and raise a family based on great schools, affordable homes, low crime rates, jobs, and a clean environment.

cstatic, the feeling I experienced upon opening an email from a fellow expatriate in Saudi Arabic. She forwarded a letter to me that read: Congratulations on your acceptance to our Masters program. When this expatriate came to me for advice on the Masters program in her area of interest over a year ago I was delighted to help. She applied to a few universities, and was devastated when she received the first rejection letter. I assured her that rejections dont mean giving up on your dreams. Receiving this acceptance letter meant that she had the opportunity to flourish, gain employment and escape words that hunted and hurt her feelings over the years. Those words were: you are stupid, you are already forty- you are too old to go back to school, and you are fat and ugly no man will ever want you. Those are all words she heard from her husband she had been married over 20 years to. Those words almost mentally destroyed her. I am not a psychologist, but an educator that specializes in leadership. As an educator and a leadership expert, I know that you cannot move forward in any endeavor if you are crippled by a situation. Specifically in this situation, it is words. Using words to hurt your character, and to purposely break you down is called psychological abuse. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, psychological abuse is the malicious and explicit nonphysical acts against a child, dependent adult, or an intimate partner. This can include controlling the victims freedom, and effectively acting to destabilize or isolate the victim. Various studies have demonstrated that psychological abuse can causes long-term damage to its victims mental health. To hold power over the abused, the abuser will resort to a number of tactics designed to hold one emotionally captive.

The TLCs on-line transaction system which, prior to this enhancement only allowed existing licensees to make their license renewal payment on-line, has been expanded to enable anyone who has received a TLC issued summons to plead guilty to and pay that summons on-line, provided that no court appearance is required. In addition, if you have an open summons for which a guilty verdict has been rendered but you have not yet paid the fine amount due, you can now pay the balance due on that summons on-line as well.

He declined to comment further and noted that Jamaican-born civil rights attorney Neville Mitchell was consulted and will be representing him in the matter. When contacted, an incensed Gordon described Humes actions as very disingenuous in offering any reasonable solution to compensate the family. It is very unfortunate that I am being labeled as mischievous when he is the one that personally assaulted Eion, destroyed his equipment and continued to lie about the incident. He needs to come clean, settle the matter and show respect to the memory of Eion who was also a close friend to all of us, Gordon urged.

The Mount Vernon Police Department swiftly apprehended those involved and will spring into action to nab anyone brazen enough to engage in a shootout in our streets like its the wild west. Shortly after 11:15am in the area of E. Prospect/Park Ave, a heavily-trafficked retail location, two groups opened fire at one another from across the busy, pedestrian-filled street. One vehicle was observed fleeing the scene and was stopped shortly thereafter. Two men were arrested and an illegal firearm was recovered. FLIPPA MAFIA New Jersey State Police recently accused Flippa Moggla of running the drug

ring by sending huge quantities of cocaine across the US to Bernard of Cherry Hill and she then organised distribution with traffickers in the State. Proceeds of the activities were then sent back to Andrew and his brother Kemar Davis. Investigators revealed that they have been monitoring the ring since 2011 following the seizure of a shipment. Flippa is facing several charges including narcotics trafficking, conspiracy and money laundering. The charges carry up to 20 years in federal prison. The case will be prosecuted by the Division of Criminal Justice under the Office of the Attorney General. Flippa Mafia grew up in Waterhouse, and attended Norman Manley High School in Kingston. Some of his better-known songs are Unfinished House, Star ah Star and Hear mi Hear.

Make no mistake, we will hunt down everyone involved and get them off of our streets. Additional arrests and upgraded charges are pending.

Brooklyn: he late Kyam Livingstons family was joined recently by elected officials and community leaders in announcing the filing of a federal lawsuit on behalf of the 37-yearold mother who died after being denied medical attention while in Brooklyn Central Booking. "Earlier today we filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of Ms. Livingston's family, said Elliot Taub, one of the familys lawyers. Ms. Livingston's death was avoidable and this will be brought to light in the course of the case. The bitter irony is that in order to bring the lawsuit, our clients were forced to answer questions about Kyam and themselves while the city still wont answer our inquires about why steps were not taken to avoid Kyams suffering and this unspeakable tragedy. According to fellow inmates of Livingston, she became increasingly ill with stomach pains, diarrhea, and eventually convulsions over the course of seven hours

while awaiting arraignment. Witnesses report that on-duty NYPD officers ignored Livingston and other inmates as they pleaded for someone to come to her aid. One witness, who is a registered nurse, indicated Livingston had been dead for 20 minutes before Emergency Medical Services finally arrived on the scene. According to Livingstons family members and supporters, the lawsuit is an important step, but it is far from enough. They demanded the names of the NYPD officers involved and the video of the filthy jail cell where she was held during the final painful hours of her life. They also called for changes to the conditions in Brooklyn Central Booking. No amount of money will bring my daughter back, said Anita Neal, Kyam Livingstons mother. I want answers. I want the video so everyone can see how they killed her. I want all the officers responsible to be charged.

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos/CMC: he Brazilian Supreme Court Tuesday ordered the extradition of former Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) premier Michael Misick who is facing corruption related charges in the British Overseas Territory. Earlier this year, the head investigator in a British governments probe of corruption in the TCI confirmed that Misick, will join 10 others, including four of his cabinet ministers, in defending allegations that they illegally sold government lands for profit and cut other sweetheart deals to enrich themselves during their tenure in office. Misick, who has been in a Brazilian jail since he was re-arrested in Sao Paulo in April had denied reports that he was seeking a plea bargain with British and American law enforcement authorities in return for implicating United States citizens and senior politicians in Jamaica, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. Attorney General, Huw Shepheard said he welcomed the decision of the Brazilian court to extradite Misick, adding it is in the best interests of the TCI that allegations of wrongdoing are thoroughly investigated. Michael Misicks lawyers vigorously opposed his extradition, but after hearing arguments on both sides the court was unanimous in its decision. Arrangements will be made to return him to the TCI as soon as possible. He faces

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC: court has cleared the way for the Trinidad and Tobago government to pursue a multi-million dollar lawsuit against several people, including former Miss Universe, Wendy Fitzwilliam. William, who won the international pageant in 1998, had, along with other former directors of the state-owned Evolving Technologies and Enterprise Development Company (eTeck), argued that the claim by the state was filed after the four-year statutory limitation period. But Justice Devindra Rampersad in a ruling in the San Fernando High Court, south of here, on Monday, agreed with the contention by the State that it only found the alleged breaches by boards after the change in government. The judge in his 22 page ruling said it would be highly unlikely and most improbable for the breaches to have been found otherwise, adding public scrutiny of public posts must exist to secure public funds. In the lawsuit, filed in 2011, the State alleges the eight-member eTeck board which also included former chairman Professor Ken Julien and Professor Brian Copeland, had entered into a TT$30 million (One EC dollar = US0.16 cents) agreement with the Chinese-based company, Bamboo Network Ltd, between January 18 and May 17, 2005, without carrying out a due diligence exercise into the companys financial records beforehand.

trial in the TCI Supreme Court on a number of serious charges relating to corruption and maladministration in the TCI during his time in office, Shepheard said in a statement. The allegations against the former premier stem from the findings of the 2008/2009 Sir Robin Auld's Commission of Inquiry which found widespread misuse of government funds and property. Misick, who has maintained his innocence had sought political asylum in Brazil, claiming that he was unfairly targeted by British authorities. Brazil rejected his application for political asylum.

He said the handcart operators were issued with guidelines on the conditions of their approval. KSAC officials also signed off on the annual operating fees.

The directors in March last year filed an application to have the lawsuit struck out, saying it was an abuse of process as it was statute-barred under the Limitations of Certain Actions Act. In defence of the claim, the State Wendy Fitzwilliam relied on Section 14 of the legislation, which postpones the limitation period when facts have been deliberately concealed. The potential subjection of any director to legal proceedings is a reality which hovers over every board to ensure that decisions made and conduct carried out are properly done to the appropriate standard and can be policed and remedied as appropriate, Justice Rampersad said, dismissing also allegations of victimisation in the case. Political victimisation, as alluded to, as real as it may be, does not feature in the courts mind in the exercise of its function as the determiner of facts related to deliberate breaches of duty, he said. Attorney General Anand Ramlogan said the judgment removed a main defence offered by all the former directors who served under the previous government.

ttorney General Eric Holder on Wednesday (October 30) announced a total of $6.7 million in grants to state and local criminal and civil legal services organizations across the country that provide legal defense services for the poor. These grants from the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) are part of the Justice Departments continuing efforts to improve indigent defense, which is often underfunded and understaffed, and to support training, mentoring, technical assistance, leadership development and research to enhance the effectiveness of adult, juvenile and tribal indigent defense practices. Everyone accused of a serious crime has the right to legal representation even if she or he cannot afford it, said Attorney General Holder.

$6.7 M in Legal Defense Services for the Poor

In recent years, the Department of Justice has made a commitment to improving the delivery, quality and availability of legal services for everyone in our country, including the very poor. Today's significant grant awards will help ensure Americas criminal justice system is fair for every defendant, regardless of wealth. These awards, in conjunction with other efforts were making to strengthen indigent defense, will fortify our public defender system and help us to meet our constitutional and moral obligation to administer a justice system that matches its demands for accountability with a commitment to fair, due process for poor defendants, said Associate Attorney General Tony West. The FY 2013 grants, which promote cost-effective innovations to

improve indigent defense, are administered by OJPs Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). In FY 2013, BJA awarded a total of $5.4 million. Of this amount, $1 million was awarded to Gideons Promise, a nonprofit organization that partners with public defender offices to build a community of attorneys committed to indigent defense reform. The funds will provide 25 new attorneys, including criminal defense lawyers working on tribal lands; establish training and leadership development for public defender trainers and supervisors and a semiannual leadership summit for chief defenders.

MUMBAI, India: pening batsman Chris Gayle says he plans to make a big impression with the bat when West Indies play India in a two-test series starting next week Wednesday. Gayle has never made a Test century against India and is eyeing three figure scores when he steps out at Eden Gardens in Kolkata for the first contest and at the Wankhede in Mumbai for the second encounter. Im looking for something big in this series, the powerful six-footer told WICB Media. I enjoy playing in India and I know Eden Gardens and Mumbai very well. The pitches are very good but they will turn a bit going into the match. The 34-year-old has played 97 Test matches and has a good record of 6836 runs including 15 centuries. He has made two triple centuries in test cricket including a memorable 333 against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2010.

Miami: son of the soil of the Caribbean Dr. Jeff Benjamin is well positioned to be the next Mayor of the City of Miami, Florida when citizens go to the polls on November 5. Miami is considered the US gateway to the Caribbean and Latin America and is key to Caribbean trade, travel and tourism. Dr. Benjamin's election would not only be seen as a victory for the citys underprivileged and minority population but an opportunity to strengthen relations between the City and countries of the Caribbean which enjoy a critical trade relationship with the State of Florida, said former Guyanese diplomat Wesley Kirton at a dinner he hosted last Friday. Speaking at the dinner, the mayoral candidate stressed that with his election the governance of the City of Miami would take place in an ethical, transparent and effective manner. Dr. Benjamin pointed out that if elected he would place special emphasis on dealing with homelessness, improving mental health care and ensuring an efficient and affordable public transportation system. "I am not running for mayor because I just want to be mayor. I want to make a difference in this great city with the help of its citizens and other well intentioned people," he said.

The dinner was hosted in honor of Dr. Benjamin as well as the visit to Florida of Equality News Publisher Dr. Bashkar Sharma of Toronto, Canada and Dr. Mark Kirton of the International Relations Institute at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad. Dr. Benjamin also pointed out that under his leadership he would seek to strengthen the commercial relations including trade with key markets such as the Caribbean and Latin America as well as China and India. "Key to my administration if I win this election will be the conduct of the city's business in an honest, ethical and transparent manner. For too long the citizens of Miami have had to put up with corruption and incompetence and I intend to bring an end to this," Benjamin said. In his remarks Dr. Kirton said it was good that West Indians in the Diaspora "are seeking to expand their involvement and influence in a wider geographic space and wished Dr. Benjamin every success at next month's election. He noted that Florida was a top trading partner of the CARICOM region and having a West Indian as Mayor of Miami should open new opportunities for greater collaboration for mutual benefit.

lose your eyes and imagine a packed church crusade in full effect in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica in the 1990s. A most unusual occurrence is taking place on stage. A charming and captivating seven-year old is given the microphone to sing, and his tender voice loaded with youthful innocence ravishes the audience. One woman faints as the infants song peals throughout the worship session. Churchgoers are captivated by this gifted youth and his jaw-dropping performance. Fast forward to 2013 and the seven year old youth at the crusade, Leighton Miller, who later attended Munro College in Jamaica is now a grown man. Leighton currently lives in New York City. He is still the proud owner of that compelling and velvety smooth voice that first had audiences awe-struck, but now he has grown beyond the church and he is now wooing audiences in many different arenas across the country. Leighton was from a Jamaican Adventist family and musical ministry was taken seriously at his home.

he City Council on Wednesday approved several anti-tobacco measures, including one that raises the age to buy tobacco from 18 to 21. City officials say their goal is to crack down on teen smoking, which was on the decline from 2001 to 2007 but hasn't moved since. "We have to do more, and that's what we're doing today. We're targeting the age group at which the overwhelming majority of smokers start," said City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. Once signed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, which is expected, retailers will be prohibited from selling any tobacco product to kids under 21. The measure also includes electronic cigarettes. "We're very worried if they start out with e-cigarettes, they'll become addicted to nicotine and then they may switch to regular cigarettes later on," said Dr. Thomas Farley, the New York City health commissioner. The move was applauded by adults, but some younger New Yorkers were not so happy. "You're an adult. You should be able to buy a pack of cigarettes," said one person. "I mean, you can think for yourselves." "I just think it's ridiculous," said another. "Let us be. Let us live." Retailers are also banned from accepting or offering discounts on tobacco products.

In the past, we only were able to teach people who were already nurses, said Susan Saladino, Chair of the Department of Nursing at the College. With this program, we get to grow our own professional nurses from the start and instill in them the kind and caring values of our Franciscan Tradition. This allows us to offer high school graduates the same opportunity to become nurses that we have successfully offered to our Registered Nurse students in the past. 3. Wet Less Often It's no fun leaving the house on a frosty morning with wet or damp hair. If you live in a freezing climate, your hair may actually freeze and break if you step outside with wet hair.

2. Deep Condition More Often Heated homes and work spaces can dry out your hair, so combat this dryness with extra deep conditioning. Look for humectant products which hold in moisture and use a good deep conditioner about once a week.

1. Beware Breakage If you experience breakage in one or two specific areas of your hair, it might have nothing to do with how you care for it, but what you wear on it. Wool hats and scarves can rub against and pull on delicate black hair, breaking it off at the nape of your neck (where the scarf might sit) or at the crown of your head. You need a hat and scarf if you live in a snowy climate, but the trick is wearing them the right way to avoid damage. Try sewing a satin or silk lining inside your wool cap. If you're not crafty enough to do this, ask a friend or family member who is. Before wrapping that wool scarf around your neck, make sure your hair is out of the way, either through a protective style or already secured beneath your properly lined hat.

ifferent seasons require different hair care techniques to maintain healthy hair. While you might wear your hair out much more often in the summer and rely on carefree styles when it's warm outside, your hair care routine will change during winter if you want to maintain healthy locks. Here are some winter hair care tips that will keep your tresses in great shape so that when spring rolls around, your hair will be ready to face warm weather in good health.

5. Rethink Protective Styling While wearing protective styles is always a good idea for keeping hair ends up and out of the way, they work especially well in winter for protecting your hair from harsh weather. Snow, sleet and heat won't be able to damage your hair as much when you keep it styled in buns, topknots, braids, twists and French rolls.

4. Use Heat Even Less Indoor heating is going to suck some of the moisture from your hair. Don't help it along with flat irons, blow dryers and curling irons. Winter is an ideal season to practice setting techniques like wet sets (completely dry before you head out the door), pin curls and wraps, none of which require heat to style your hair.

Even if a wash n' go was your go-to style in the spring and summer, winter requires less shampooing and daily wetting. You should still shampoo and condition about once a week, but since you aren't swimming often, you don't need to wet and/or conditioner wash as much.

So come up with the right balance of time with each other versus time apart where each of you gets a night out with friends every week but Saturday night is reserved for the two of you, and stick to it. Your decorating styles: You love French Country, but your partner prefers midcentury modern. Rather than battle it out, shop together and pick out pieces that you both like. Cant agree on anything? Call in an interior decorator or a neutral friend with great style to help you come up with a look youll both love. Your tolerance for clutter: Youre so organized your sock drawer is color coded. Your partner, on the other hand, is more like Pigpen from Snoopy. The solution: Cut the clutter to minimize those piles under the bed. Go through each room and decide what to donate, what to store and what to throw out. Your sleep styles: He wants the room pitch-black with classical music. You like dim lighting, a ceiling fan and total silence. Come up with an environment that you can both sleep well in. Your sex life: Sex every other week works for you. But your partner wants to get it on four times a week. If its not a health issue (a simple blood test can rule out a hor-

Who Cheats More Men or Women?

Dear Divine Diva: ecently my husband and I got into a heated debate over dinner, with two other couples about who cheats more men or women, what's your expert opinion. -Angela and Donny, Tarrytown Dear Angela and Donny: Men and woman generally cheat for various reasons. To say who cheats more would be more of a guess, even though there are basic statistics out there suggesting that men cheat more than woman, this does not mean that it is fact. In-fact, today, cheating woman is just as common as cheating men. In fact, in 3 of the 4 cases in the failed relationships close to me, it was the woman who cheated. The main reasons why men generally cheat on their spouse relates to sex. Quite commonly there is a sex problem within the relationship or the man just wants more or new sex. Whereas a woman generally cheats as a last resort when all her complaints are left unheard, as a last resort a woman may cheat, but it will generally be for emotional reasons rather than for sexual reasons. If a man continues to show no respect for the woman, continues to ignore her, and gives her no emotional support, some woman may look elsewhere to have their emotional and physical needs fulfilled. A man, however, is generally a more simple being. Thats not to say some men arent deep and emotional, however, generally speaking, a man will cheat when he feels his need for sex is not being fulfilled, or, he has spoken to his partner about this and has got not no respectful response. Sorry ladies, but it is often just that simple.

monal problem) or an emotional problem (like stress from a job loss) then you need to step it up. Your vacation styles: Your dream vacation involves a white sandy beach and cocktails with little umbrellas. But your partner prefers extreme adventures, like shark diving and caving. Split your time up so that your vacation is a mix of down time and adventures, or take mini-vacations apart. And, no, you dont actually have to dive with sharks if you dont want to; maybe just go along in the boat. Your parenting styles: Youre super laid back, while your partner thinks tiger moms are onto something. This is the kind of thing that you should work out before you get married (and certainly before you have kids). Start by discussing why you believe in a certain parenting philosophy (is it because you were brought up that way?) and figure out a parenting style that works for you both. If you cant come to a compromise this one is tough reach out to a therapist. -Source: thenest.com

Most of the reasons cheating woman become unfaithful are reasons that could be easily rectified by a husband who is willing to make the effort and put in some extra work within the relationship. For this reason, we believe that most affairs relating woman cheating on men are preventable. Cheating men may also be preventable by through greater communication in every aspect of the relationship. Some kind of mutual agreement that benefits both in the relationship is always the best bet. To be honest, cheating is for kids who havent grown up. We recently read a an interesting report that stated, men and woman who are more likely to cheat are those who have been spoilt rotten since kids, have never had to cope with any major stress as partners have always bailed them out, have never dealt with any hard times, have always had everything done for them, and people who like to have their own way. In other words, grown ups with self respect, self worth, and respect for their partners will generally do whatever they can to make the relationship work. If someone is willing to break your sacred trust, is he really worth keeping? Is that who you want to spend the rest of your life with? We believe that if you choose to have a relationship with someone, then you should both love each other before you make the commitment. A relationship is about trust, loyalty, commitment and a lifelong quest of fulfilling each others needs. When you love someone, you live not only with them, but for them. Their happiness is yours, and their misery is yours, you take the good with the bad, gradually trying to improve the good, whilst overcoming thrown obstacles along the way.

Marijuana Can Help People With HIV/AIDS Live! M

arijuana can help people with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). I know from personal experience and scientific evidence. I found out I had the so-called HIV virus in 1991. After the initial shock and years of learning to live with the dogma that HIV=AIDS=DEATH, I conquered my fear of dying. Thereafter, I have questioned everything about the science of HIV and AIDS. I read books by activists, doctors, scientists, and people living with HIV/AIDS. They were very helpful in my understanding of the so-called AIDS virus and where it was spreading. I became a self taught HIV and AIDS Educator and activist. In 1996, I founded the BLACK AND LATINO AIDS COALITION of New York (BLAC NY). BLAC (Pronounced Black) was a notforprofit voluntary organization based in Harlem New York. BLACs mission was to slow and/or stop the spread of HIV in communities of color particularly among heterosexuals. We never specifically recommended treatments but personally I always have used marijuana purchased legally or illegally and either smoked or ingested as its synthetic counterpart called Marinol (dronabinol). BLAC N.Y. stop functioning in 2002 but I have continued to use marijuana in my treatment protocol. I have been living with HIV/AIDS for over thirty (30) years. Today, I am a 65 year old Grandfather and founder of The American Pot Smokers Association (TAPS). The reason for my longevity, in my opinion, is my belief in a higher power and use of marijuana. The word cure of HIV/AIDS by marijuana may be a stretch but a recent study at Temple University seems to indicate that

An Urgent Appeal We need $5 M to purchase two Linear Accelerator Machines for Jamaica
I
am appealing to everyone especially our Caribbean brothers and sisters. I have been asked to purchase a Linear Accelerator Machine for Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay, Jamaica costing approximately US $5 Million. I met with the Minister of Health, Dr. Fenton Ferguson a few weeks ago. He asked if I can purchase two machines as Kingston needs one also.

THC, cannabis lifeblood, does in fact reduce negative symptoms associated with HIV. Researchers at the Temple University School of Medicine in Pennsylvania found that comBy Dennis Levy pounds related to The American Pot THC stimulated the Smokers Association cannabinoid type 2 (CB2) receptor in white blood cells, which in turn seems to weaken HIV infection, says a 2012 press release from the Federation of American Societies For Experimental Biology (FASEB). At the very least, the study once again signifies that the true scope of marijuanas medicinal impact are still not fully grasped or discovered. And that one of the worst diseases known to mankind can be eased with a joint. Previous studies have shown that marijuana treats AIDS. Marijuanasmoked or ingestedis used by many people living with HIV to manage various symptoms of illness, including pain, depression and weight loss. The numerous effects of marijuana are the result of chemical interactions between the drugs active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and two receptors on a variety of cells in the body: cannabinoid receptor 1 (CR1) and cannabinoid receptor 2 (CR2). CR1 receptors are densely populated in the brain and, when stimulated by chemicals like THC, can have a variety of neurological effects.

nnette Runcie went from working in Corporate America at Proctor & Gamble to owning her own franchise in July 2004. When Proctor & Gamble downsized in 2002, she saw it as a good opportunity to own her own Golden Krust franchise using her lump sum severance package. Runcie made the decision to use Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill as a way to learn the restaurant business in order to fulfill her dream of owning a fancy catering business. Pleased with the flexibility of owning her own business, she enjoys having adjustable hours and the freedom to implement her own ideas into the business. She also sees it as a plus that there is a high demand for Caribbean food throughout New York City. Runcie says the best decision she has made while owning the franchise is giving back to the community and participates in City Harvest, Christmas giveaways, Thanksgiving meals and backpack drives in the summer.

Bible Truth Church Stages We are Strong

t was an evening of praise, singing, dance and drama titled We are Strong, on Sunday, October 20th as the Bible Truth Church of God International (BTCGI) at 3787 Merritt Avenue in the Bronx staged the amazing talent show to support the churchs community outreach programs. Head of the churchs mens department Pastor Norman Bailey explains that the proceeds from programs such as the sold-out We are Strong will enable the church to expand its community outreach initiatives and achieve the goals of its building fund. The over 150 persons in attendance were entertained by Samantha ThamesMcLeod, Joan Hill, Bevon Newman, Samora Kennedy, Dane Simpson, Minister Stanley Dennis, Suzy Smellie, Taisha Chaldersingh, Musical Director and Producer, Andre Hawthorne, Writer, Composer and Lead Musician, Damion Hawthorne as well as the multi-talented professional actress, dancer and director, Dominique Andriese. One of the themes of the final act, Skaken not Broken, a thought-provoking play written by Damion Hawthorne and directed by Dominique Andriese, is that sometimes our lives may be shaken up so that we can be taken to a better place. The audience was reminded to remain strong in what they do and never lose faith. Bishop Leroy Hawthorne noted that one of the goals of Bible Truth Church of God International is to serve the community, including those beyond its congregations base. To this end, the church participates in

approximately three times per year. The coordinator of the churchs Midnight Run program, Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, reports that the church has also built a reputation on the streets of Manhattan

for the hot soup that it provides to the homeless courtesy of Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill on White Plains Road at 219th Street in the Bronx. This direct interaction with the homeless has engendered a spirit of volunteerism amongst the church members and they have become more eager to lend a hand to those in need. Bishop Hawthorne further noted that the Church holds an annual back-to-school drive where it distributes free school supplies to students in the Bronx community. This years back-to-school drive was combined with a free market where the church also distributed food, clothing and household items to over 200 families, he added. For over six years, the church has also served its local community through weekly donation of bread to the Baltic Street AEH Inc. Bronx Peer Advocacy Center in the Bronx, a not-for-profit organization that provides assistance to persons with mental health diagnoses. The church caters special luncheons for this center throughout the year, where its volunteers serve delicious meals, including the annual Thanksgiving feast. In keeping with its mission to transform lives both locally and internationally, Bible Truth Church has partnered with a growing ministry in Isiolo, Kenya to which it provides mentorship and support. The church also provides the means for children in this African community to receive an education. For more information about Bible Truth Church of God International and the community outreach programs, please visit the website at www.btcgi.com or join the BTCGI community for service on Sundays at 11 a.m. and Bible Study on Wednesdays at 8 p.m.
