COURSEOVERVIEW
Thiscourseisbothaseminaronthetheoryofliterarytranslationandaworkshopinwhichwe
willshare,reviseandrefineourowntranslationsinprogress.Wewillreadanddiscussthe
majortheoreticaltextsthatmakeupthefieldoftranslationstudies,includingworksbyDryden,
Schleiermacher,Goethe,Benjamin,Jakobson,Borges,Heidegger,Steiner,Berman,Derrida,
SpivakandApterandreflectontherecenttrendsinthefieldtowardthepoliticsandethicsof
translation.Inourdiscussions,wewillconsiderquestionsoftranslatability,fidelity,the
hierarchicaldivisionbetweenoriginaltextsandtheirtranslations,andthechargedpoliticsof
translation.Throughoutthesemester,wewillcomparedifferenttranslationsofliterarytextsin
ordertoexaminehoweachversionworksanddiscusshowtranslatorsmakedecisionsof
language,style,format,andculturalequivalency.Wewillalsohearfromseveralguest
translatorsthroughoutthesemester.Attheendoftheterm,eachstudentwillprepareafinal
paper,whichmaybeeitheraliteraryortheoreticalanalysisoranoriginaltranslation
accompaniedbyacriticaltranslatorsintroduction.Theprerequisitesforthisclassincludea
demonstrableknowledgeofalanguageotherthanEnglish.

atranslationofashortproseworkorseriesofpoemsaccompaniedbyafivepage
criticaltranslatorsintroduction.
