Role
The role of the teacher in the classroom is that of a: o Authority Figure: This does not mean that the teacher is the one to discipline the student; this means that the teacher is there to protect the students and have a relationship with them based on communication. The teacher is there to deal with disciplinary action when it gets to that point. o Facilitator: The role of the teacher is not the source of all knowledge; the teacher must inspire students and help them learn for themselves, much like what John Dewey believed a teacher should be. o Collaborative Partner: The teacher is there to work with the students to enhance student learning. The teacher and the student work together, like Alfie Kohn says, When we do things that are controlling, whether intentional or not, we are not going to get those longterm outcomes. The teachers role is to work with their students not control them.

o Democratic A democratic classroom allows for students to collaborate and share responsibilities. The students will take more responsibility for their learning and their actions. o Establishing Accountability Students will know that they, as well as the class as a whole, may be held accountable for their actions. The students are able to talk and communicate with the teacher while still knowing what is expected of them. This will help students respect themselves and others as well as help develop their conflict resolution skills. o Encouraging Differences The teacher must be sensitive to the different needs of the students and the students must be sensitive to the needs of others. Students will learn to be more supportive to each other and can come to the teacher when need arises. The teacher will help to keep the students thinking of others while they are learning. o

My name is Emily Timmons and I am a hopeful graduate of Brigham Young University- Idaho. I am going to be graduating with a bachelors in elementary education. I chose to be a teacher because it is a job that has always interested me. I come from a big family and whenever I had trouble in school I could go to anyone in my family to ask for help. That is what I want to offer my students, I want to be there for any questions they may have. I want to be their facilitator of knowledge and help them grow in this world. Teaching is a profession that I honor and hope to be apart of one day.

Curriculum
Children need to be introduced to a wide range of subjects. Subjects like: o Critical body of knowledge- Reading, Writing, and Mathematics: These subjects are important because they are a crucial part to a childs future learning and success in life.

o History: Students need to be taught history, which includes the great books of the past, events of the past, and the effect that it has on our current world because these are topics that will help a child succeed in their future schooling and in being a part of society.
o Science: Science will help students learn about the way that the world works, which will help the student, become a more educated member of society. o Arts- Music, Drama, and Great Literature: The arts are important subjects to learn because they will tell students of the world around them and help them to face issues that they may soon encounter. o Physical Education: Physical education is important because a child needs to have a healthy physical state to allow for development of their mind. It also includes teaching a student about their health and about the workings of their body.
o Business: Business includes economics

Assessment
Students should be assessed in an array of ways, including:

o Projects
This will help students learn for themselves. Students will be able to learn how to research topics on their own and how to analyze that information. Students will also have different journals as projects for the class. o Discussion Students will have discussions with the teacher and with each other. Discussions give students the chance to develop themselves and their knowledge, it also allows for them to learn through others to gain a deeper understanding o Cooperative Learning Students will work in groups, and individually at times, to complete goals and assignments. Teaching through cooperative learning will give students the opportunity to learn from each other and develop their teamwork skills.

o Portfolios
Students and the teacher will compile a collection of the students work that shows their skills, knowledge, and experience of the course and will be graded based on their abilities presented in the portfolio. o Authentic Assessment Students will be a part of his/her grading process to an extent and the grades based on their ability to work through the course. o Ongoing Feedback Students will have the ability to communicate with the teacher and share information, perspectives, and performance feedback. It can show the teacher where a child feels effective and where the child feels they need to do better.
