CONTENTS - Axillary artery and its branches - Axillary veins and its tributaries - Brachial plexus, cords and their branches - Lymph nodes - Loose areolar tissue.

Axillary artery is one of the important structures lying in the axilla surrounded by cords of brachial plexus, veins and other structures. Axillary artery extends from the outer border of the first rib to the lower border of teres major muscle. This artery is crossed by the pectoralis minor muscle, which divides it into three parts. Part proximal to it is called 1st part, that lies behind is called 2nd part and the part distal to it is called the third part.

Branches of the axillary artery are 6 in numbers. 1st part 1 branch, Superior thoracic 2nd part 2 branches, Acromio thoracic & Lateral thoracic arteries, 3rd part 3 branches, Subscapular artery, Ant. & Post. Circumflex humeral art. All these arteries supply the structures in the axilla, pectoral region, scapular region and forms an anastomosis around the scapula. Veins are also having similar names drain into the axillary veins, which is lying antero medial to the axillary artery.
