Descriptive Data: There are a total of twenty-nine students in this seventh grade social studies class. Of this twenty-nine, ten have been identified as special education students. Along with the special education students, there are two students who are English language learners. Most of these students range in the average ability level. The topic that this lesson deals with is the Economics of the Middle East. Title of Lesson: What is Specialization? Objectives: o Given a worksheet/activity assessment, the student will be able to explain what specialization is. o The student will be able to identify how specialization encourages trade between countries given a specialization activity and question. o The student will be able to understand how specialization encourages trade between countries of the Middle East given the countries product and what it needs. CCGPS/GPS Standards: SS7E6 The Student will explain how voluntary trade benefits buyers and sellers in Southwest Asia (Middle East). a. Explain how specialization encourages trade between countries. Preparation To prepare myself for this lesson, I first re-introduced myself with the material that I will be covering in this lesson. I prepared a power point presentation that I plan to lecture from dealing with the term specialization, how it encourages trade, and some Middle Eastern countries that specialize in something. This power point goes along with the standard and the material that they will be tested with at the end of the year. Then I prepared my activity that I plan to use to get the students to participate in specialization and see how it can encourage trade. Materials/Resources Power point on specialization Worksheet activity dealing with specialization along with cutouts Website: The Times of Israel http://www.timesofisrael.com/israeli-smell-technology-bans-bugs-from-food-crops/ Material from the Georgia Coach Book on this standard (page 111)

Title: Georgia CRCT TEST PREP 7th Grade Social Studies Publisher: Clairmont Press, Atlanta GA. Procedures Introduction: To begin the introduction of my lesson, I will open up with a discussion of the word specialization (all of this will be through the power point lecture). They should know the definition of the word because they cover it in the vocabulary for the unit. The only prior knowledge that they should have is that of the vocabulary. From this introduction I hope to obtain the objective of them understanding what specialization. With the rest of the lecture/discussion, I hope to obtain the objective of them seeing how it encourages trade along with other facts about specialization in the Middle East. Activities: When the introduction is done, and the students are able to understand what specialization is, I will then go through with the rest of the lesson. In doing this, I hope to give them problems to discuss of countries that specialize in something but they need something else so. Through these problems, I want them to understand how specialization encourages trade. I will ask for discussion and answers of students to see if they understand the concept. Then I will discuss some countries that specialize in a certain thing. I will then ask again how these countries can get what they need through their special product. Then I will begin my activity where the students are grouped and these groups are countries. I will give them a specialized product and something that they need. I will then see if they are able to grasp what they need to do in order to get the product that they need. Throughout this time, I will be proctoring the activity and helping in anyway that the students need. Closing: After the activity is over, I will hope to ask the students again if they are able to see how specializing in a product encourages trade between countries, bring it back to the Middle East of course. Also, I hope to give the students time to answer the question that goes along with the activity. Assessment For my assessment, at the end of the activity they will have to make a poster. This poster will show me whether the student grasps the concept of specialization. They will have to put their specialized product on the poster and their economic need. Then they will have to write at the bottom how they got what they needed. Accommodations/Modifications/Enrichment The only accommodations that my students may need in the activity are for me or the other teachers to read some of the directions to them. Also, I will incorporate a fill-in-the blank notetaking guide to assist with the instruction part of the lesson. This guide corresponds directly with the power point. Self-Evaluation For the most part, I was very satisfied with the way that the lesson went. The main weakness of my lesson would have to be during the lecture/discussion time. The students were use to me from me being there but they werent use to me teaching. The next time I teach I hope to be more engaging and thorough with my questioning. I also noticed myself calling on those who had their hand raised the most. This kept the other students out of the discussion, so next time I hope to

keep myself aware of engaging others who might not raise their hands as often. The greatest strength of this lesson would have to be the activity that we did in groups to back up what the lesson was about. From talking with the students while the activity was going on, the hands on approach seemed to make it more practical to them. There are some rules and direction changes that I will make if I use this lesson again, but for the most part it went well. They worked in groups and I watched them discuss the answers to the questions and all seemed to contribute. Through my assessment, I would say that about one group of five didnt seem to get the questions that I was asking them. Other than that, the rest of the class got the idea of what was being asked of them.
