HEADING Jeremy Cress Algebra 1 Variables and the Cartesian Plane OVERVIEW/ RATIONALE

65 Minutes, C-Band

This is the last day of the first unit of the year. It should be review for most students. It is meant to refresh students on variables and graphing, before they begin to learn new algebraic concepts. It following the previous days lesson, which refreshed students on graphing points on the Cartesian plane. Italics represent thinks I would have done differently throughout the lesson.

ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS/ ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS What are variables? How are variables represented on a Cartesian plane?

GOALS/OBJECTIVES To have the students understand the difference between one and two variable equations To have the students understand that a two variable equations has an infinite number of solutions, which is represented by a line. To have the students be able to find and identify solutions to two-variable equations.

STANDARDS CCSS.Math.Content.HSA-SSE.A.1 Interpret expressions that represent a quantity in terms of its context. CCSS.Math.Content.HSA-CED.A.2 Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales.

MATERIALS Handout for warm-up. Graph Paper PowerPoint

PROCEDURES OPENER

Do Now: Have students get handout from front of room. Students will practice graphing points on a Cartesian plane to create a picture of a spaceship. Have the students draw their initials on provided graph paper, being creative as they want in regards of location on the graph, and recording the endpoints of each line segment. (8:15 8:22)

BODY OF THE LESSON Students are to take notes on loose-leaf paper. (8:22-:8:50) Definition of variable Compare variable and constant Identify variables and constants in equations. Show how a variable can act as an constant Discuss number of solutions of an equation with one variable o Linear 0,1,Infinite o Non-Linear o How do we find solution show but dont go into, as this is not an objective of the lesson Discuss number of solutions of an equation with two variables o Explain how solutions are written (ordered pairs) o Put up an easy problem and have students suggest enough answers to make sure point is made that there is an infinite number of solutions. Discuss why there are an infinite number of solutions; explain why we represent this as line on graph. Discuss how we find solutions o Show when equation is in the y=mx+b setup o Demonstrate how to find solutions when both variables are on same side of equation. Discuss how we check if a ordered pair represents a solution Practice finding solutions to 2-variable equations, given one variable, using table provided on board. Have students come to board to present their solutions

Benchmark project work time (8:50-9:20)

CLOSURE Exit slip Have students explain in their own words why a 2-variable equation has an infinite number of solutions. ACCOMODATIONS Group work when practicing finding solutions, so that students who are having trouble can ask peers Make sure to write out explicit steps, so that I am not making any assumptions about students prior knowledge

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION (MAY HAPPEN IN BODY/ PROCEDURES) Exit Slip Homework on finding and testing solutions to two variable equations
