PE Module 9-12

9/10/13

High School: East Longmeadow Number of Students: 27 Teacher: Kevin McGee Grade Level: 9 Facilities and Equipment Gyms are relatively old, probably at least 20 years. Decent amount of space in big gym, little space in the small gym. Outside field turf is new and well kept, deals well with the rain. Weight room seems to have slightly older machines and weights, but most machines seem well kept. 1. Students treated each other with respect. I observed a relatively positive environment. Students had respect for Mr. McGee, remained quiet when speaking. One student shook my hand to say hello. This class was a well-behaved group. 2. A variety of personalities, some shyer types and then more social types. The more athletic kids seemed to be the more social and talkative. When I joined in on the play, there was a team of boys. One was taller and a bit more talkative, while the other one was a bit more quiet. Even though not all the student enjoyed football, they still participated with some level of effort. I saw everyone moving, but there were a few kids where you could tell they dont really play sports. 3. Mr. McGee likes to operate in small groups to maximize participation. Likes to use ladder style tournament to sort out playing levels by themselves. He likes to utilize a field game like tag to warm up his students. One rule to settle disputes, he uses rock, paper, scissors. So the winner would win the argument no matter what to quickly settle disputes. 4. Students are participating in a lot of team outdoor sport units such as football, field hockey, and Ultimate Frisbee. The units are about 1-2 weeks long and seem to cover basic aspects of the sports. (Throwing, Catching, Running Routes) 5. There were no disciplinary issues. There is a point system instituted of 4 points maximum for each day. If there are issues with participation, clothing, tardiness, respect, or following directions then points are deducted. Verbal warnings are used to keep students on task. 6. Class sizes are about 25-35 and sorted out by grade level for most groups. 7. My biggest concern is being able to keep 25-35 students on task at all times. Especially if the group has a few students that constantly get off task by either ignoring orders or just want to do their own thing. I have no issue with most students, but there are occasionally situations where there may be a troublemaker that making teaching hard for many teachers. 8. I look forward to working with the students and seeing them have fun. I enjoying imparting knowledge of sports to younger students and hopefully making it more enjoyable.
