Summary of Non-family Employees By Casey Odom This report focuses on the hiring of non-family employees on dairy farms.

In surveying dairy farm owners and managers about their production, we discovered that the hiring of non-family employees may be important when looking at milk production and BTSCC. Of those who responded to the survey, only 38% of the farms had an employee who was not a family member. This includes both full-time and part-time employees. Larger farms (>500 cows) are more likely to have non-family employees than small (<250 cows) or medium (250-500 cows) farms. Only 33% of small farms have non-family employees, while 97% of medium farms have non-family employees, and 96% of large farms have non-family employees. This can be seen in the charts below. All of this data is statistically significant and, along with many more tables and data, is detailed in the Report on Comparison of Means between Milk Production and Employees. All of the data in the report was collected with the Survey of Mastitis Management on Dairy Farms.
