According to the statistics released by Internet World Stats Africa is ranked lowest in terms of Internet penetration, at 5.3%.

North America, with a penetration of 73.6%, however Africa has experienced most rapidly growing Internet and Broadband sector in recent years due to improvements in infrastructure, the arrival of wireless access technologies and lower tariffs. In the same period INTERNET usage in Zimbabwe has grown by 165% over the last three years.During the same period, the Internet penetration has gone up from 6.7% to 10.9%. According to Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) figures, internet subscribers stood at 4,5 million at the end of 2012 compared to 2 million subscribers the previous year. Mobile internet subscribers, according to the regulator, had reached 3.2 million in the second quarter of 2012 and the growth trend is expected to be maintained, given most rapidly growing Internet and Broadband sector due to improvements in infrastructure, the arrival of wireless access technologies and lower tariffs.

in Africa, in the same period Zimbabwe was ranked 10th in terms of numbers of users, behind Nigeria (10.0 m), Egypt (8.6 m), Morocco (7.3 m), South Africa (5.1 m), Algeria (3.5 m), Kenya (3.0m), Uganda (2.0 m), Tunisia (1.7 m) and Sudan (1.5 m).

This process is already virtually completed in Africas more developed markets.

The growth is attributable to mobile phone companies that have given their combined 10 million-plus subscribers internet access on mobile devices through third and fourth generation internet platforms popularly known as 3G and 4G. The mobile network providers-Econet Wireless, Net One and Telecel- have also promoted internet use through various promotions.
