DESCRIPTION Health 9 is a semester course that will provide students with information and insight into how to develop a healthy lifestyle. The goal is to provide students with the information or the ability to access information to help them make positive choices when it comes to their health. The content of this course follows the Michigan Health Education Content Standards and will cover a variety of topics. Students will use discussions, films, readings, writing, lectures, pictures, guest speakers, and special projects to explore the many aspects of personal and community health issues. STUDENT EXPECTATIONS With the exception of studying for tests most of the course work will be done in class. Students will learn through the use of chapter outlines, small group discussions, journal entries, whole class discussion, presentations, current events, guest speakers, group projects, and teacher lecture. In addition, the successful student will be expected to: o o o o o o o o Attend class regularly and participate in class activities Complete all work and projects on time Invest in his or her work Strive toward quality Be on time to class and prepared Students are asked to keep cell phones and electronic devices in their lockers Food and drinks will not be allowed in the classroom Most of all BE NICE, WORK HARD!!!

Consequences for not following the above expectations will be warning, student conference, parent contact, and finally when all else fails I may need to meet after school with the student.

GRADES

Grades will be earned based on the achievement and effort students demonstrate in the following areas:

*Final exam or project at the end of the term will not count more than 20% of the final grade. **Health is a required class for graduation.

OTHER SPECIAL SITUATIONS Homework: Typically, homework is only given once a week and is due on Fridays. Assignments that are not turned in at the beginning of the hour on Friday are considered late and will be deducted 50% credit. Late work will only be accepted one week late. Current Events: All students will be required to prepare 2 Health Current Events. It can be a story you see on TV, hear on the radio, read in a newspaper or find on the internet. For students who have limited access to newspapers and magazines they will be available in the classroom. Good Internet sources: www.msnbe.com www.cnn.com

Write a summary in your own words of the news article. Do not copy the article or use quotes from the article. This is your words describing what you have read or seen. This should be 5 7 sentences long. Write about the significance of this story and tell the source. Share your story in class for extra credit. 3 Rs Read, Reflect, & Respond: We will read a variety of articles in class. After reading the article you should think about its meaning, how it relates to our class, or yourself. The assignment that will be collected is your written thoughts on the subject. This could include what you thought the article was about, your opinion, something you agree or disagree with, or questions about the article. The only wrong answer is no answer at all. Tardy/Pass Board: You have 3 tardy/passes per term. If you dont use them you earn extra credit points. Absent Notebook: In the event that a student should be absent from class, a daily record of class events, activities and homework will be recorded in our class Absent Notebook. Students that are absent are encouraged to check the notebook for any course work they may have missed. Students can also check our class website for this information.
