Intended Outcomes After the presentation, participants will understand The purpose of the scope and sequence being developed for Social Studies How the scope and sequence relates to the standards The process used to create the scope and sequence. After the presentation, participants will be able to complete a brief survey about the purpose and process.

There are two sets of standards The Grade Span Expectations (GSEs):
Historical Perspective Civics & Government Geography (added at the last hour) Economics (added at the last hour)

The GSEs: Overview


The GSEs do NOT Provide a complete scope and sequence Offer course outlines Describe all the essential skills and knowledge students could have Measure knowledge of facts or other textbook information (e.g., U.S. or World History dates, people, places, events, or eras).

The standards DO Outline the most important and essential skills and knowledge every students is expected to have. Create a standard for student demonstration of civic attitudes, civic knowledge, and historical thinking skills. The GSEs focus on the how the big ideas and dominant themes throughout history can also be applied today. Keep Mr. Slattery awake!

What is a scope and sequence?


The grade level scope and sequences that are being developed for Social Studies

We organized the social studies standards into a format that is more instructionally friendly.
We clustered the GSEs and CCSS literacy standards into units of study. We will provide a structure to help teachers, schools, and districts determine the content and resources that can best be used to teach the standards.

The Standards: The Structure of the GSEs for Social Studies


Strand Serves as the content and process organizers for the grade span expectations Statement of Enduring Knowledge Provides overview of the big idea for each standard The Why. Stem Describes the main curricular and instructional focus of the GSEs across the grade spans. These are the same across grades. The What. Concept and Skill Indicators Indicate the proficiencies for a given grade span - The How.
