6th-Family Consumer Science (FCS) Course Syllabus

SY 2013-2014 Course Content This 9-week exploratory course is designed to provide students with basic concepts, skills, and competencies essential to living in the 21st century. Students will explore the roles they will assume as adults and acquire skills needed in life. Included will be the importance of food selection and nutrition. Also included will be activities on personal relationships, family living, adolescence, conflict resolution, consumer awareness, sewing (hand and machine), and meal preparation. Class Activities Hands-on exploratory experiences will be emphasized. Students will plan and construct projects in a cooperative learning setting. Skills in problem solving, decision-making and leadership will be emphasized. Expected Class Behavior Follow directions first time given Listen carefully On time--prepared with binder & pencil Work together in a team Enter to learn & share Respect yourself, others, & property Homework/Classwork Policy Assignments are given ample time for their completion in and out of class. The expectation is that all assignments will be turned in on time. The student is expected to track all assignments made during an absence. For excused absences, the same number of days for make up will be given as days absent. For a planned absence such as a family emergency or outing, make up assignments/projects may be assigned for completion while absent from the classroom. Late assignments will be docked 10% for each day late. Teacher Contact Mrs. Margaret Bruce, teacher, is available for conference during plan periods, before and after school.
