English/Language Arts Lesson Plan: Resource Room Students: David, Kyle, Savanna, Lena, Emma September 25, 2013

st th Grade: 1 5 Subject: Language Arts: Decoding and Writing Standards: Kindergarten Level EL.K.1 2006 - READING: Word Recognition, Fluency, and Vocabulary Development Students know about letters, words, and sounds. They apply this knowledge to read simple sentences. EL.K.2 2006 - READING: Comprehension and Analysis of Nonfiction and Informational Text Students identify the basic facts and ideas in what they have read, heard, or seen. Students will listen to and begin to read grade-level-appropriate nonfiction, such as alphabet books; picture books on science, social studies, mathematics and other subjects; and beginners' dictionaries. EL.K.5 2006 - WRITING: Applications (Different Types of Writing and Their Characteristics) Students begin to write and draw pictures for specific purposes and for a specific audience (intended reader). EL.K.6 2006 - WRITING: English Language Conventions Students begin to learn the written conventions of Standard English. SCI.K.1.1 2010 Use all senses as appropriate to observe, sort and describe objects according to their composition and physical properties, such as size, color and shape. Explain these choices to others and generate questions about the objects. 1st Grade Level EL.1.1 2006 - READING: Word Recognition, Fluency, and Vocabulary Development Students understand the basic features of words. They see letter patterns and know how to translate them into spoken language by using phonics (an understanding of the different letters that make different sounds), syllables, and word parts (-s, -ed, -ing). They apply this knowledge to achieve fluent (smooth and clear) oral and silent reading. EL.1.2 2006 - READING: Comprehension and Analysis of Nonfiction and Informational Text Students read and understand grade-level-appropriate material. Students begin to read a variety of nonfiction, such as alphabet books, picture books, books in different subject areas, children's magazines and periodicals, and beginners' dictionaries. EL.1.6 2006 - WRITING: English Language Conventions Students write using Standard English conventions appropriate to this grade level. SCI.1.1.1 2010 Use all senses as appropriate to identify the component parts of objects and the materials from which they are made. 1. Materials: a. 2. Objectives: a. Introduce facts about apples b. Learn the parts of an apple c. Explore different types of apples d. Complete graphic organizer describing apple discoveries e. Complete writing prompt about favorite apple f. Read Apples by Melissa Schaper together and independently. 3. Motivation: Read Apple Harvest by Calvin Harris in order to introduce the topic and encourage discussion. 4. Goals for Learner: a. Learn more about apples, including vocabulary. b. Learn how to use a graphic organizer to gather thoughts. c. Participate in discussion and complete graphic organizer. d. Write complete sentences with prompts, including capital letters and punctuation. 5. Content and Procedures: a. Today we are going to learn about apples. I have several different kinds of apples for us to try but first lets read a book about apples. b. Read Apple Harvest by Calvin Harris. c. Talk about the book and ask students questions during the reading. d. Introduce apple vocabulary. Use apple vocabulary words and an apple on the board. Ask the students to match the words with the picture on the board. e. Give the students an apple vocabulary worksheet to complete. f. Cut up the apples. Give pieces to the students to taste. g. Talk about how the apples look, taste, feel and smell. h. Complete the apple graphic organizer. i. Give student the My Favorite Apple writing prompt. Remind students to write in complete sentences, use capitals and punctuation. (Differentiate lesson plan for David: Write his thoughts down for him.) j. Read Apples by Melissa Schaper together and have the student attempt to read the story independently. If student is able to read book independently, instruct student to take the book home with an I Love Reading slip with instructions to read the book to two people, have each person sign it and return it the next day. If the student cannot read the book independently, send the book home with the student to have someone else read the book to him/her two times, sign the book and return it the next day. 6. Practice/Application: a. Complete apple vocabulary sheet. b. Complete graphic organizer. c. Complete writing prompt according to rubric. d. Read Apples by Melissa Schaper, together and independently. Take home and read to someone and bring it back signed. 7. Evaluation of student learning: a. Able to complete apple parts vocabulary page independently with word box. b. Complete writing prompt according to rubric. c. Read Apples.

8. Closure: Today we learned about apples. Tomorrow is the birthday of an important person in our countrys and apple history. Can you guess his name? Johnny Appleseed.
