Pathfinder Autism -- Pathfinder -Autism Autism: a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social

Slater 2

interaction and communication and by restricted and repetitive behavior (Wikipedia, 2011). Autism is a complex disorder that affects thousands of children every year. This diagnosis has a serious impact on the family as many parents are left wondering what to do next. Little is known about autism, but much research is underway to learn as much as possible about this disorder. It is the hope of many parents and physicians that autism will soon have a cure or a more effective treatment that will enable the family unit to function more successfully. This pathfinder is meant to serve as a tool for parents, interested family members, and health professionals who are not very familiar with this disorder. Most of the sources provided in this pathfinder are currently available at Texas Womans University library for your own perusal. Many of the sources listed in this pathfinder are available in online format, but there are some sources available in print edition. In order to better distinguish the differences between the online and print sources, I have included the call number of printed sources and websites for online sources. The conference proceedings, state-of-the-art reviews, agencies, and individuals listed in this pathfinder are resources that are not linked to TWUs library, but remain useful to this pathfinder for patrons who may benefit from outside resources. Annotations will be provided to show the purpose of the source and its intended audience.

Johns, Martin. 2010. "Physicians should conduct pretravel consultations." American Family Physician 81, no. 4: 401. MEDLINE with Full Text, EBSCOhost (accessed December 1, 2011). This is a patient handout material about autism. It details the signs of autism and lists informational websites .The material is brief, easy to read, and is recommended for parents. 1998. Communication in autism. Bethesda, Maryland: National Institutes of Health National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, 1998. CINAHL Plus with Full Text, EBSCOhost (accessed December 7, 2011). This article details how infants communicate during the first few days and few months of life. It also goes on to show that kids with autism tend to have language and speech problems during their development. While no one knows how to cure autism, it has been shown that speech therapy does help autistic children improve their communication skills. This consumer patient material is a good read for parents and others who want to learn more about autism. 2002. "Information from your family doctor. What you should know about autism." American Family Physician 66, no. 9: 1680. MEDLINE with Full Text, EBSCOhost (accessed December 1, 2011). This is another patient handout containing information about autism. It explains what autism is and provides websites and phone numbers for informational purposes. Parents will find this brief handout easy to read.

The National Institutes of Health funded autism research that focused on disease-in adish technology (Pasca, 2011). Researchers are learning what goes on in the brain of children affected with autism spectrum disorders, including Timothy Syndrome. The new technology implemented during this research project allowed researchers to pinpoint molecular defects in a patients own brain cells (Pasca, 2011). It is hoped that this research will lead the way to more effective treatments. Siri, Ken and Lyons, Tony. Cutting Edge Therapies for Autism 2011-2012. New York, Newy York: Skyhorse Publishing, 2011. Her website can be accessed at http://www.templegrandin.com/. Parents and researchers are encouraged to check out her site as she does provide useful information.

Pathfinder Autism Dr. Simon Baron-Cohen

Slater 21

This doctor is well known for his research in autism. Simon has conducted extensive research into autism spectrum conditions at the psychological, diagnostic, and neuroscientific levels. For his outstanding achievements, he was awarded the British Psychological Society's Spearman Medal and the American Psychological Association's McCandless Award (www.autismtoday.com, 2011). Jenny McCarthy Jenny McCarthy is a well-known actress, model, and mother of a child with autism. She is particularly known in the autism community for speaking out against childhood vaccinations. This is a hot-button issue between autism experts and parents of autistic children. She has also written a book entitled Louder than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism. More information about Jenny McCarthy can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenny_McCarthy. Conclusion This was quite the lengthy project, but I enjoyed putting it together. During the past ten years, I have met autistic kids and parents. The road is load and arduous for the parents as they continually seek answers to the multitude of questions while trying different therapies hoping to find something that will help their child succeed. This disorder has even affected members of my family as my niece and nephew both have symptoms of high-functioning autism. I feel that this pathfinder would be greatly useful to both parents and researchers as it would enable them to learn where to find the information. I knew that some databases would be better suited for

Pathfinder Autism

Slater 22

academics or professional use whereas a couple databases were truly geared toward average patrons. I really enjoyed finding outside resources (agencies, conferences, and programs, that is) because a lot of parents want to know what is available within their communities. Finding conferences also allows parents to network with professionals and other parents who struggle with the same issues. Doing literature research is important, but time is of the essence when a child has been diagnosed with autism. It has been a well-known fact that the earlier the intervention, the better the outcome for the child. A better outcome for the autistic child also allows the family unit to function more cohesively. Looking over this paper, I probably should have switched to my back-up topic, but I chose to pursue this topic because I enjoyed doing it. I acknowledge that there are a couple areas of my paper in which I only posted two sources instead of the required three or four sources. For example, I had three different sections of dictionaries, but at least two sources per section. I could have easily pulled a couple of white rabbits out of Googles black hat to fulfill the requirement, but it wouldnt have been connected with TWUs library. It was important to me to develop this paper utilizing as much of TWUs professional resources as I could in order for this pathfinder to be useful for local patrons. I also realize that I had the option to change the layout of my paper. I chose not to do this because the instructions that we were given earlier this semester seemed to have it well-organized. Im not sure I could do a better job of organizing it. If time allowed, I would like to construct an autism awareness webpage linking TWUs library to the communities of Denton County. It would be beneficial to link our Denton families

with these databases, periodicals, audiovisuals, community resources, and other information so that they would continue to learn about the latest research going on in the field.
