Lesson Plan - Monday TOPIC: Geometric Reasoning GRADE: 7C DATE: 20/5/13 TIME: 70 mins

CURRICULUM OUTCOME:
Identify corresponding, alternate & co-interior angles when two parallel straight lines are crossed by a transversal Investigate conditions for two lines to be parallel & solve simple numerical problems using reasoning

WALT: Demonstrate what you know about types of angles and angle properties.
Recognise parallel lines and transversals and find relationships between angles created when two parallel lines are crossed by a transversal.

WILT: Can you:

Identify and classify angles? Recall rules involving angles? Find the value of unknown angles? Show the markings to label parallel lines?

INTRODUCTION: Things will be different! Explain that it may be a bit different in the class with me, but that Ill do my best to support them in their learning. There will probably be things which I do differently, so you can either let me know so I can do it the way you are used to, or you can just see how I do it and maybe that will work for you too! There will be a clearer transition between History and Maths, so youll need to be ready with all your History packed away and your Maths things ready. Explain behavior management and rewards. o o o o o CONNECT TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE:
Working in teams of 3 (in whisper voices or youll be working in silence on your own) brainstorm all you can remember about angles (remember when I can to the class the first time and Mrs Hill had all those drawings on the back whiteboard?) While students are working draw a quick plan of the classroom on a spare space on the back wall. Going round the class can each student tell me a fact about angles and then take the white board marker and write the name of ANOTHER STUDENT on the plan on the whiteboard (to help me learn names!)

Clear & explicit expectations Positive reinforcement Rewards (pens/games) 3 strikes before making up for wasted time after class Work it out as last resort

Lesson Plan - Monday CONNECT TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE cont: Make sure that on the board we have, angles

at a point on a straight line in a triangle in a quadrilateral acute angles obtuse angles reflex angles right angles

Students can now complete the ANGLE REVIEW ACTIVITY SHEET.

MAIN CONTENT: Does anyone know what we call a pair of angles which add up to 90? COMPLEMENTARY So if one angle is 35 , what will the other one be? Does anyone know what we call a pair of angles which add up to 180? SUPLEMENTARY So if one angle is 20 , what will the other one be? What about when 2 straight lines cross? VERTICALLY OPPOSITE Is there anything special about the two pairs of angles? If this one is 40 what will the opposite one be? What about the one next to it? Why? On a new page of your book or on your laptops open a new folder in your MATHS folder call it UNIT 4, create a word doc called GEOMETRIC REASONING Copy down the following information TYPES OF ANGLES NOTES (PAGE 1) Review meaning of parallel and how to mark parallel lines How would we mark a square?

Lesson Plan - Monday Draw pair of parallel lines and a transversal. Label them and include a definition to one side (Two lines which are the same distance apart for the entire length, A line which crosses a pair of parallel lines)

What is the effect the transversal has when it crosses other lines? (it creates angles) How many angles are created when a transversal intersects two other lines? (eight)

Explore angles associated with parallel lines View the learning object Investigating angles in parallel lines. Move the red dots to change the angle size from 90 .

Ask students to draw diagram and identify and label: One pair of angles on a straight line

One example of angles at a point One pair of vertically opposite angles

CONSOLIDATE: Students can try activities on: http://www.toonuniversity.com/flash.asp?err=200 (multiplayer) http://www.factmonster.com/math/knowledgebox/ (identifying angles and questions on intersecting lines)

FINISH: Reflect on angles and shapes created by transversals and parallel lines. Introduce next lesson topic: F shape corresponding angles Z shape alternate angles U shape co-interior angles Play game of complementary or supplementary in pairs (if time)
