EXPERIMENT 1

Friction on inclined plane

Objective

To determine the coefficient of friction under static condition between

various material and steel surface.

Theory

tan Ø = FR = µ
tan Ø = µ = coefficient of friction.

Apparatus

Inclined plane friction apparatus LS-1206, steel block, plastic block,

brass block, wood block, aluminium block.

Procedure

1. The apparatus was setup in a horizontal position.

2. A specimen was chosen and its weight, R are record.
3. The specimen was than place on the horizontal plane,
somewhere in the mid span.
4. The plan was elevate slowly until the specimen start to move
even with a small movement.
5. The angle was record in Table 1.
6. Step 1 -5 was repeat for other specimens.

Discussion

The results from the experiment are not the same with the result from
the table give. This is caused by various reasons. First is the material
used in the experiment are not the same with the one in the table, this
caused the difference with the result obtained. Than is the apparatus
used are not in mint condition. The plan is used over and over and this
caused the plan to be smoother compared to when it was newly
bought.

Conclusion :

The coefficient varies with different type of material. Rougher surface

will have higher coefficient of friction will smother surface will have
lower coefficient.
