Students explain how some aspects of daily life have changed over recent time while others have remained the same. They describe personal and family events that have significance. Students sequence events in order, using everyday terms about the passing of time. They pose questions about the past and examine sources (physical and visual) to suggest answers to these questions. Students relate stories about life in the past, using a range of texts.

View slideshow: Objects from the past with students. Compare

objects from the past with the present to consider similarities and differences

Ask students: Focus questions Q: Stop at each pic and ask what it is and what we use today instead? Stop on telephone.

How was the object used in the past? For what purpose would we use this object today? What is different about this object from the past to an equivalent object that we use today? What is similar about this object from the past to the equivalent object that we use today?

We can find out things from the past by asking or interviewing people. Ask students to (access through learning guide) watch the video: Interview about daily life in the past: Part 1 (5:28). (The video interviews three grandparents about daily life in their childhoods). On Friday you will be conducting your own interviews with grandparents. Notice how the person asking questions in the interview was looking at the gradparents eyes to show they were interested in what the grandparents were saying. After she asked a question, she paused to wait for a response from the grandparents so they could share their point of view. The grandparents shared their own thoughts and feelings about daily life in the past.

Re interviews about the daily life of children in the past, ask: What was different about the daily life of children in the past compared to today? What was similar about the daily life of children in the past

compared to today? Why has the daily life of children changed over time? What techniques has the interviewer used to find out information about the past? How do you think you would feel about daily life if you were a child living in the past? Why?

Venn Diagram of the grandparents response versus the same or different to you?
Refer Lisas copy interview answers The past (grandparents answer) Who does the household jobs? How many people are in your family? Who works outside your home? Who cares for the children? Present - same or different?

Discuss the effects that changes in daily life have had on people in the past and today Ask students to watch past: Part 2 (2:48)

the video: Interview about daily life in the

The video interviews three grandparents about how the roles (jobs) and structures in the family have changed or stayed the same over time.

Brainstorm: Add to Venn diagram

Q: What are the changes from life in the past to day? Both parents working, children now have access to computers, children now have lots of toys, clothing and choices. No TV or radio Q: What are the reasons for this change in daily life over time? A: New technology, such as, computers and transport Cause and effect The cause is the reason something happens and the effect is what happens as a result. When we identify a change in daily life, and the reason why this has happened, for example, communication technology has increased, therefore we can communicate quicker.

Discuss the way that questions were posed in interviews and the points of view demonstrated in the interviews Explain the importance of techniques such as using eye contact and pausing for a response when conducting an interview.

In work books, write:

Q: What would it have been like to live as a child in the past? A Q: How would you have felt if you were living then? A: Q: How do you feel about what the people in the interviews experienced as children? A:
