January 18, 2013 Dear School Administrator: Most of my own secondary school experience was centered around giving back to the communities I grew up in; it would give me no greater pleasure as a future educator than to receive a student teaching position in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. As a secondary education student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I have had many opportunities, through both volunteer and coursework, to challenge myself and begin my growth as a social studies educator. I would value a student teaching position at the high school level in your district as I continue to develop the skill sets needed to become an excellent educator. I believe that, as an educator and teacher, my job does not stop at simply preparing students for the job market or citizenship. Education is also about finding that field that best explains the way the world around oneself functions. The social sciences, for me, have always provided that explanation: I am drawn to museums and the words of the past because they tell the stories of how humanity constructed the society I live in and why it functions the way it does. I value the experiences that a diverse and engaging social studies education can provide students; I love encouraging the middle and high school students in the Urbana-Champaign area that I work and tutor with to view history and the other humanities in light of their own lives and watching the subject material finally clicking together for them. In addition to the experiences I have had teaching students social studies in the UrbanaChampaign area, I have been privileged to be an assistant color guard instructor at Hinsdale South High School where I work with ninth through twelfth graders during their marching band season. I also have strong ties to reading and literature as I am pursuing a minor in English, and I would welcome and embrace the chance to use and expand my teaching experiences in these fields in any capacity. As a future educator, I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to not only teach in your school district, but to continue my own education as I build upon my teaching abilities as well. I hope to have the opportunity to speak with you about a potential student teaching position and answer any questions you may have. Thank you for your time and consideration. Best regards,

Jorie Grande
