Unit 3 Group Project Guidelines You will be assigned to a small group that you will be working with for

most of this unit. Together you will be assigned about two sections of a chapter from the textbook. You will become experts of the material in those pages in order to teach your classmates the essential information. There are three components to this project: 1) In Class Activities: These could consist of warm-up exercises, small presentations, worksheets, etc. In most cases each group member will be turning in their own work to be graded. Some of the activities may require some advance preparation outside of class. 2) Peer Teaching: Part of becoming an expert of the information is being able to teach other people. Your classmates will not be engaging with any of the readings and material, so they will be relying on you to teach them what they need to know. a. Guided Peer Teaching: There will be two in class activities that I have designed for you to teach your classmates. The first is a jigsaw that will require the group to split up and individual teach a small group of your peers. The second will be to create a newspaper as a group that creatively reveals the major ideas and terms from the reading (a separate rubric will be provided for this activity). b. Group Designed Peer Teaching: Becoming an expert on a small section of information allows you with time to learn something that is not in the textbook. The third activity will be designed by you. As a group you will design a lesson that will teach the class something that is not in the textbook. I want you to find a topic to explore in more depth. This could be a concept or theme, a person, place, idea, event, etc. Use your assigned reading as a guide. Note: This is not just an informative presentation of material. I want you to be creative and interactive with your classmates. This is your chance to become the teacher and have some fun! In class you will have time to design, propose, and create your lesson. I will need to approve all ideas ahead of time. I am also available if you need ideas, resources, etc. Your lesson should be 20-25 minutes in length. 3) Analysis Paper: The final part is the individual component of the project that will give you time to summarize and reflect on your groups work. This paper should be about 3-4 pages typed and follow the standard writing guidelines for this class. Note: If you would like to section the paper to help you organize your thoughts you may. Please see me if you need help writing or organizing your paper. The following components should be included in the paper. 1. Describe all three activities that your group completed in the unit (jigsaw, newspaper, group lesson). How do you think your group did overall in accomplishing the goal of teaching your classmates? Explain in detail. 2. Summarize your groups topic for the group lesson and what you found. 3. List the sources you used to obtain the information 4. Summarize what your group did to prepare 5. Describe the lesson in detail and reflect on how successful you think it was. 6. Critique how you think your project went and what you think would make it better if you were to do it again. Give your group a grade based on how successful you think your group was in completing all three unit peer teaching tasks *This is a project that requires everyone to rely on each other to do their work. If even one of your classmates does not complete their work, the rest of the group will suffer. In other words, look out for each other, help one another, and hold your classmates accountable.

Individual Expectations for Unit Project 1) Students will still be asked to complete individual assignments weekly. Aside from worksheets and quizzes, this includes warm-ups written in the notebooks and any notes that should be taken during lectures. Notebooks may not be due until the end of the unit, but I recommend you stay on top of the work. 2) Group projects are not a chance to sit back and let your classmates do the work for you. This unit will require your full engagement because your classmates will be relying on each individual to do their part of the work so everyone can be successful. At any point in the unit this project can be turned into an individual project. There are four chapters in this unit (about 80 pages) that you will be expected to know. With the help of your classmates it is possible, individually however it will be very tough to complete in the time I have allotted for the unit. Group Expectations for Unit Project 1) Everyone has been assigned to a group and you will need to work together to complete all the tasks. I expect everyone to be respectful to each group and what they can contribute to the group. Each person has their own set of strengths that can help the group as a whole. 2) Each group will be given a folder that is to be kept in the classroom at all times. Any notes or work completed as a group or for any of the project components must be kept in there. That way if someone is absent the group can continue to work on the project. I will upload all the handouts and worksheets to my website, but if you need copies of anything you need to come see me. 3) I expect the group to hold each member accountable for their work, whether individual or for the group. Groups will need to create tasks and roles for each activity so no group member is left out or not accountable for a portion of the project. If issues do arise you need to come see me. As I said above, other arrangements can be made for individuals to complete the project alone. In other words, just cooperate and work hard on the project.

I have read the guidelines above. I understand what is expected of me and the consequences if I do not fulfill my role as a group member for this unit project. Group # ________ Hour: __________
