DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM
Many employees want to make the move to a leadership role within their workplace but are overlooked time-after-time because they do not have formal training and experience in a leadership role. Leadership 101 is designed to give those in clerical or administrative positions entry-level leadership training that can help facilitate career growth. Leadership 101 is comprised of six one-hour lessons that are taught in a small group setting with eight to ten participants. Each participant is either self nominated or nominated by his or her supervisor for the program. During this series participants will engage in lively discussion about leadership and leadership skills. Each participant will be given the opportunity to reflect on their own leadership goals and develop a plan to achieve their goals.

PROGRAM GOALS AND PRIMARY OBJECTIVES


Goals Create a list leadership characteristics. Increase communication and presentation skills. Create a personal leadership development plan.

Primary objectives After group discussion about the characteristics of effective leaders the learner will be able to identify the qualities of a successful leader as assessed through instructor observation of participation in discussion. The learner will develop presentation skills by presenting one leadership quality to their peers in Leadership 101 using visual elements and persuasive speech. After engaging in a group discussion about professional behaviors the learner will reflect on their own professionalism as assessed by a personal reflection assignment. The learner will be able to describe communication strategies that can be used in multiple settings after participating the communications skills lessons.

LESSON 1: LEADERSHIP IS
Length: 1 hour Objectives:
Through in-class discussion, participants will generate a list of the characteristics of effective leaders. Participants will share with the instructor their personal goals for the Leadership 101 series.

Activities:
Welcome participants to the Leadership 101 series. Introduce the goals and objectives of the program to the participants. o Goals Create a list leadership characteristics. Increase communication and presentation skills. Create a personal leadership development plan. o Objectives After group discussion about the characteristics of effective leaders the learner will be able to identify the qualities of a successful leader as assessed through instructor observation of participation in discussion. The learner will develop presentation skills by presenting one leadership quality to their peers in Leadership 101 using visual elements and persuasive speech. Introduce instructor and their leadership learning and leadership experience. Ask participants to introduce themselves and why they are participating in this series. Ask each participant to complete the handout My Leadership 101 Goals and return to the instructor at the end of the session. Give participants several minutes to complete the handout. Next, tell class that today they will be working on a list of characteristics of good leaders. Using a flip chart, record characteristics of good leaders that are called out by the class. Each idea should be recorded without prejudice, as all contributions are valid. Once list is generated have group review list. Ask if there are any items that they would like to remove or add to the list. Next, introduce assignment for next lesson. Each person will be presenting one leadership quality. They will each have 5 minutes to present that quality, how it is demonstrated, and why it is an important part of leadership. Participants should prepare both a visual representation

and be prepared to speak for 5 minutes about their quality. Have each person choose a quality from the shared list to present. Introduce the online individual journals using Penzu (http://penzu.com). Each student will create their own journal that is only seen by the instructor to share reflections throughout the series of sessions. For the first assignment, each student should create his or her own Penzu journal before the next session and reflect on todays lesson. Wrap up session by thanking the participants for their contributions to the session, asking them to return their My Leadership Goals to the instructor and letting them know how to contact the instructor with any questions about the assignment.

Assessment of learning:
Each participant will complete the handout My Leadership 101 Goals and return to the instructor at the end of the session. Each participant will contribute at least 2 characteristics to the qualities of an effective leader discussion.

Follow-up extension of learning:


Participants will prepare a 5-minute presentation on a leadership quality that they will present to the group during the next session. Participants will create their first Penzu journal entry.

LESSON 2: LEADERSHIP PRESENTATIONS BY PARTICIPANTS


Length: 1 hour Objectives:
The participant will present a leadership quality that effective leaders possess based upon a list of shared characteristics generated in the last session. The participants will use visual elements in their presentation in order to illustrate their assigned leadership quality.

Handouts:
None

Activities:
Review the previous session with the participants and the list of leadership qualities that was generated. Ensure each participant has created their Penzu journal and their first reflection. Next, have each participant present the leadership quality they selected to present. Each participant should be given 5 minutes to present. After all participants have presented ask for their feedback on having to speak in front of the group. Tell them that speaking in front of groups is part of many leaders responsibilities. Before the next session, participants should complete a journal entry reflecting on the presentations given during this lesson. During the next session, presentation skills will be discussed to help them learn some tricks and tips in giving an effective presentation.

Assessment of learning:
Participants will each give a 5-minute presentation on a leadership quality by describing through spoken word and illustration. Participants will be assessed using the Presentation Evaluation Rubric.

Follow-up extension of learning:


Participants will complete a reflection on the presentations from this session.

LESSON 3: PRESENTATION SKILLS


Length: 1 hour Objectives:
After viewing presentation on presentation skills, the learner will be able to identify how presentation skills help or hinder a leader.

Activities:
Welcome group back to Leadership 101. Ask them if they have any reflections based upon the previous session. Tell the group that today they will be learning about presentation skills. Open Presentation Skills PowerPoint and use it to present the material. At the end of the presentation have the group break into pairs and discuss the following questions: o What makes a good presenter? o What can you do to engage an audience? o How to presentation skills help a good leader? After discussing have the pairs share with the group their lists. Ask the group to reflect on their own presentations from the previous sessions. Could they have used the techniques in their own presentations? Have each person complete the Muddiest Point handout reflecting on the muddiest point for him or her in how leadership links to presentation skills. Wrap up session by thanking group for participating in todays discussion. Let group know that they can add any additional points about presentation skills and leadership to their Penzu journals.

Assessment of learning:
Participants will each participate in the discussion about presentation skills by contributing at least one way that presentation skills help leaders. At the end of the session, have participants complete The Muddiest Point handout.

Follow-up extension of learning:


Learners should to add additional points about how presentation skills link to leadership to their Penzu journal.

LESSON 4: PROFESSIONALISM
Length: 1 hour Objectives:
After participating in discussion with the instructor and peers, the learner will be able to describe behaviors that demonstrate professionalism and unprofessionalism. Using the handout Demonstrating Professionalism the participant will be able to list instances where they demonstrated both professional and unprofessional behavior.

Activities:
Welcome participants back to Leadership 101. Ask if they have any reflections based upon the previous session. Have each person complete the Demonstrating Professionalism handout. Ask participants to get into small groups and discuss their responses. o Ask them if there is anything else they think should be added to the list Next ask the following questions of the whole group to foster discussion. As the group is discussing this list of professionalism, start to write down responses in two categories on a flip chart or Smart Board: Professionalism and Unprofessionalism o Why is acting professional important? o How can you demonstration professionalism to your coworkers, customers and supervisors? o What have you seen in your workplace that demonstrates professionalism? o Have you seen anything that is unprofessional? o Why is professional is important for leaders? Ask the group Professionalism can be demonstrated in different ways to different groups. o Ask if they can list different groups they might demonstrate professionalism to. Possible ideas include: peers, supervisors, customers, friends, and family. o Ask how professionalism is displayed to each of these groups. o Generate a chart that lists group and method as group is discussing topic. Wrap up session by thanking group for participating in todays discussion. Let group know that they can add any additional points about professionalism to their Penzu journal.

Assessment of learning:
Each learner will participate in the discussion of professionalism by contributing at least 2 items to both discussions about professionalism (Professionalism vs. Unprofessionalism) and Demonstration of professionalism.

LESSON 5: COMMUNICATION SKILLS


Length: 1 hour Objectives:
After reading articles on communication strategies, the learner will be able describe effective communication strategies that can be used in multiple settings.

Activities:
Review professionalism discussion from previous session. Ask if are there any other behaviors that demonstrate professionalism that they can add to the list that has been generated. Introduce communication strategies using Communication strategies PowerPoint presentation. Ask participants to get into small groups and discuss their responses to the following questions: o Describe ineffective communication strategies used by leaders. o Describe effective communication strategies used by leaders. o What are some communication strategies that you use to communicate in your work area? Give each group time to discuss and then have them share their group responses to the questions. Record responses on a flip chart. With 5 minutes left, ask the learners to complete the One-Minute Reflection handout. Ask the learners to answer the following question in 1 minute as a recap of what was discussed in todays session: How do you communicate professionally? and record on the handout. After 1 minute, ask each learner to share one strategy they use with the group. Make sure to point out it is OK if the same idea is repeated.

Assessment of learning:
After discussion the learner will contribute at least one strategy they can use to communicate effectively. This will be assessed in an end of session one-minute summary how do you communicate professionally?

Follow-up extension of learning:


Learners will add to their Penzu journal additional points about communication skills.

LESSON 6: PERSONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY & GOAL SETTING


Length: 1 hour Objectives:
Participant will use what they have learned about leadership to create a concept map that illustrates what leadership looks like to them. List their personal leadership goals and develop a plan to achieve the goals

Activities:
Review communication lesson from last session and ask participants if they have any questions about the topic. As this is the last session, tell students that today they will be reflecting on their learning at the end of the session by creating their list of leadership goals. This list will be discussed with the instructor one-on-one in the next week and used to develop a leadership career plan. Before then though, ask participants if there are any leadership skills that have not been discussed. Ask the group why they think that these skills havent been addressed. Next have participants create a concept map of what they think it take to be a leader. They should put leadership in the middle and create spokes around it with the different elements of leadership. Once completed they should share with the class their illustration.

Assessment of learning:
Participants will complete a concept map that illustrates the qualities that they feel is important for leaders to have. Participants will complete the My leadership goals reflection and develop a plan to achieve the goals along with the instructor.

Follow-up extension of learning:


Meet one-on-one with the instructor to develop learners own leadership development plan to help them achieve their leadership goal(s).

Good Listening Skills


Give full attention to the person who is speaking. Eliminate distractions. Make direct eye contact. Indicate your interest. Lean into the speaker. Use phrases such as, Uhhuh, I understand, "and I see. Do not interrupt. Wait your turn. Listen to feelings and gestures as well as words. Try to get the general idea of what someone is saying. Do not shift attention from the other person to yourself. Ask questions for clarification. Avoid making judgments. Dont spend too much time thinking about what you are going to say. Summarize; recap the highlights.
