ATLS@STUDENT COURSE INFORMATION

During the Student Course, the core medical content and related skills sessions are taught.
Please study all material in the ATLS@Student Manual, including the appendices. Based
on our experience and to successfully complete the course, it is VERY IMPORTANT that
you study the materials BEFORE the course begins. Adequate time will be available for
questions and answers during the course. As you read the materials, you will note the
program's unique educational design and its inherent philosophies. The concept of the
program is simple yet profound. We recognize that some clinical procedures performed in
your country may vary from those outlined in the manual. We also recognize that there are
other acceptable approaches to the care of the trauma patient. However, for the purposes
of this course, your successful completion of the course, and to promote a method of
standardized care for the trauma patient, the ATLS@core content and related material
presents one. safe approach to assess;n~ and man~;~ the multiplv ;niured patient. This
;s known as the "ATLS@Wav." Discussions during the course and your responses during
practice and testing sessions should focus on the "ATLS@Way."

The course focuses on the "first hour" of trauma management, starting at the point in
.~
time of injury and continuing through initial assessment, life-saving interventidn,
reevaluation, stabilization ana when needed, transfer to a ~ospital that has the resources
and capabilities to manage the patient. The course consists of written pre- and postcourse
tests, core content lectures, case presentations, discussions, development of life-saving
manipulative skills, practical laboratory experiences, interactive skills sessions, and a final
performance proficiency evaluation. Based on well-established principles and objectives of
trauma management, the course provides doctors with one acceptable method for safe,
immediate management, and the basic knowledge to assess and manage the trauma
patient to ensure the best possible outcome.
