Course Description

Description
This course is designed to provide students with a broad overview of the world of work. This curriculum will enhance other career awareness tools by providing experiences that are designed to introduce students to the technical nature of todays world and the role of productive workers. Students will be introduced to career development as a life-long process. Topics will include self and career assessments, career exploration, skills and qualities needed in a work environment, and electronic information sources. It is intended to build upon concepts taught in 6th grade Study Skills and to prepare students for 8th grade Creative Thinking. Students will also be introduced to STEM careers (careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and 21st Century job skills; also known as the Four Cs (collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity). Students performances will be evaluated by means of formative assessments and summative portfolios and projects.

Pathways Partnership with Service Credit Union

The Pathways class also partners with Service Credit Union to teach students about budgeting, savings, and financial investments. The CU4 Reality Program is integrated and used throughout the duration of the 18 weeks.

Students will complete classroom career awareness activities as a means of developing thinking skills, utilizing information-gathering techniques, and exploring self-management tools. Textbooks and resource materials are utilized for completing these activities, as well as instructional strategies that are listed below:
