Learning Teaching Plan ____The Endocrine system________________

1. Aim Introduce the endocrine system and the role and function of hormones. 2. Standards Table: Drawn from the Intermediate Core Document Content Standard 4 Key Idea Key Idea 1: Living things are both similar to and different from each other and from nonliving things Performance Indicator(s) 1.2: Explain the functioning of the major human organ systems and their interactions. Major Understanding(s) 1.2h The nervous and endocrine systems interact to control and coordinate the bodys responses to changes in the environment, and to regulate growth, development, and reproduction. Hormones are chemicals produced by the endocrine system; hormones regulate many body functions. Process Skills Standards 1, 2, 6, 7 Standard 6, Key Idea 4: Equilibrium is a state of stability due either to a lack of change (static equilibrium) or a balance between opposing forces (dynamic equilibrium). 4.1 Describe how feedback mechanisms are used in both designed and natural systems to keep changes within desired limits. Intermediate Process Skills 9. Identify structure and function relationships in organisms. 3. Performance Objectives (1) Students should be able to describe the function of the endocrine system. (2) Students should be able to identify the main components of the endocrine system. 4. Key Questions What is the endocrine system? What is a hormone? What produces hormones? 5. Misconceptions about the topic Misconception Correct Understanding The endocrine and nervous system are Both interact to maintain homeostasis and completely separate. respond to stimuli. Hormones act independently. Hormones interact with each other to produce effects Only women have hormones. Both women and men have sex hormones, although they differ 6. Prerequisite skills Be able to understand basic human anatomy. 7. Vocabulary (a) from the Core Document: Endocrine system, homeostasis (b) additional terms: pituitary, pineal, adrenal, thymus, thyroid, testes and ovary 8. Materials: Notes sheet, homework 9. Safety concerns and disposal NA 10. Learning and Teaching Experiences Time 5 E Teacher Does Student Does 5min Engage Entry quiz: What is one Answers questions. Im expecting

component of the endocrine system and where is it? Compile answers (if any). Put up powerpoint diagram of unlabeled glands. What do they all have in common? 15min Explain Introduce topic with powerpoint slides. Ask questions throughout 10min Elaborate Class discussion regarding prior lab. What would have happened if we would have scared you first? Would adrenalin have an effect on response time? Can we design an experiment to test this? 2min Closure/Review Endocrine versus nervous system review sheet 11. very few correct due to general lack of knowledge about endocrine system. See if they can fill in any of the glands based off picture. If not, try to lead to answers Answer questions and take notes based off notes sheet. Participate in discussion. Form hypothesis and together design an experiment to test hypothesis. Figure out independent and dependent variable, control, how to test and predictions. Receive homework, do to best of their ability.
